The best place to start in a relationship is with vision. You are in a relationship. Together. United. On the same team. Why? To what end? For what purpose?

The reason this is first is because It depersonalizes your relationship and makes it about something that is neither all you or all your partner. We all want to be a part of something greater than ourselves – it is why, deep down, we pursue relationships. But if we don’t acknowledge that (and name what it might be), it gets really hard to come back to. because, in the absence of a named vision, we will assume the vision is ME – my emotions, ideas, expectations, etc.

And that is a much better second step than a first.
