I know it is a few days late. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do to present my photos, since there were so many. Last night I decided to make a slide show out of them. While I often do special effects with my videos, I thought the best thing here was to let the pictures present themselves. There are a few I took which didn’t make it into the show, but most, even the bad ones, got their... Read more

Distributism is often said (particularly by its adherents) to be an alternative both to socialism and to capitalism. But as G.K. Chesterton notes in his masterly work on Distributism, The Outline of Sanity, capitalism is a term that can mean several quite different things: When I say “Capitalism,” I commonly mean something that may be stated thus: “That economic condition in which there is a class of capitalists, roughly recognizable and relatively small, in whose possession so much of the... Read more

Oklahoma City was devastated by a deadly bomb, placed there by hate filled individuals. For those who continue to grieve, especially those parents who lost their babies we pray, Hail Mary, Full of Grace The Lord is With You Blessed are you among women And Blessed is the Fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us Sinners Now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Read more

Greg Sisk, over at the (always superb) MIrror of Justice blog, has three excellent essays on Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama’s participation in the Compassion Forum hosted by Messiah College in Pennsylvania. The discussions have very much centered on the role of religion and faith in the public square; quite apposite considering some of the Holy Father’s recent comments about the role of faith in the United States. Sisk’s most recent essay analyzes the responses of both senators to the... Read more

In The Forbidden Kingdom, two “legends” of “kung-fu”, Jackie Chan and Jet Li, have finally gotten together for a movie. For most people, that all they will need to know. They either like movies by Jet Li and Jackie Chan, or they do not. When I went to see the movie, I knew very little as to what I should expect – it appeared that it would be some kind of “fantasy” story which had Chan and Li team up... Read more

Adam Greenwood ponders: Lying is immoral. Fiction doesn’t lie because the author is honest that he’s inventing. (Though sometimes authors can edge up to the line with “autobiographical novels” or Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code or Wolf’s I Am Charlotte Simmons that the author claims is based on research and fact.) What fiction does do is to seduce the reader into forming attachments to people who don’t exist. Is this immoral? My gut says darn straight it is. And what’s... Read more

I posted the pictures last night. But sheer exhaustion prohibited anything more than the most basic commentary. This post hopes to make up for that, but I won’t drone on. I was a “set up” volunteer, working in the vesting areas to make sure the priests and bishops knew where to go. My day began at 2.45am. Having met up with some friends (and leaving my wife sleeping), we arrived at the stadium before 4am. Already, the place was alive... Read more

Delivered in both French and English, the Holy Father discussed: Global development and equitable distribution, especially in Africa and developing nations (French portion) Violations against the order of creation and respect for the environment (French portion) Call to recognize and uphold the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights (French and English portions) The human person as foundation of social order (French portion) Human rights as expression of justice not mere will of legislating body (English portion) Religious freedom, inter-religious dialogue... Read more

Neither of these posts will get as wide of a reading as they deserve.  From the first: However, as so often happens, certain elements seem determined to greet it with snottiness and mockery. That doesn’t reflect well on their own faithfulness, nor on their sense of decorum. Far too many, in the Catholic segment of cyberspace, refuse to accept the fact that their own personal preferences are not binding on the Church. Once and for all, the United States is... Read more
