The Prosperity Gospel Has Found Its President: Donald Trump

Given the utterly repugnant things Donald Trump has said and done and continues to say and do, it’s hard to imagine a group of pastors getting together with him in a room to anoint Trump as God’s chosen candidate for President of the United States.

And yet, that’s exactly what’s going on in this video.

But when you look at the list of people in attendance, this scene makes a lot more sense.

Perfect sense actually.

It’s essentially the cast of TBN. Among those present: Jan Crouch, Paul White, and Kenneth and Gloria Copeland. It’s just a shame that Joel Osteen and Creflo Dollar couldn’t make it, otherwise you would have had the prosperity gospel Mount Rushmore all together in one room.

Which is what makes this scene make so much sense.

Donald Trump is the perfect prosperity gospel candidate.

Like the prosperity gospel itself, he’s the walking antithesis of the actual gospel. Greedy, self-serving, manipulative, and hostile towards critics, I can’t think of a presidential candidate more fitting for these pastors to idolize.

He’s the prosperity gospel incarnate: crude, materialistic, and antithetical in every way to the life and teaching of Jesus.

Now, it would be easy to write this scene off and just a bunch of TBN celebrities anointing their fellow celebrity and his conveniently new found faith in hopes that the blessings of Trump will one day shower on them.

It would be easy to say that’s all this is…if it weren’t for the inexplicable fact that Trump is beloved by many evangelicals. Some of that love has shifted to his soft spoken, but equally bigoted opponent, Ben Carson, but as of right now, Trump still commands the evangelical vote.

Given that many of those same evangelicals vehemently reject the prosperity gospel, it will be interesting to see how they respond to this scene.

Eh, who am I kidding?

If his Christian supporters can look past the legion of ways in which Trump already spits on the life and teaching of Jesus because he hates the same people they hate “says what he thinks and doesn’t care about being politically correct,” I’m sure they can figure out a way to look past this too.
