Top Ten (Plus One) Islamophobes

Among Gaffney's critics is Republican lobbyist Grover Norquist who has said in response to Gaffney's statements, "When you say we're going to start telling people you can't build a church, a synagogue, or a mosque somewhere, that's a direct attack on religious liberty."

Brigitte Gabriels

Brigitte Gabriels

Brigitte Gabriels, who founded ACT! For America Education (formerly known as American Congress for Truth) in 2002, grew up in Lebanon where, according to her website, she lived in a bomb shelter from age 10-17 due to her country being torn apart by "Islamic militants, in league with Palestinian followers of Yasser Arafat" (though that story has been questioned by critics). "I know what Islamic terror is," Gabriels writes, and her goal is to make sure that radical Islam, Islamic terror, and "cultural Jihad" will not take over America.

Gabriels maintains on her website and in numerous interviews that a threat of radical Islam is the "greatest existential threat to the safety and liberty of the 21st century," that there are dozens of terrorist sleeper cells throughout the U.S., that the majority of mosques and Islamic schools call for "jihad against non-Muslims," that Muslims want sharia law to replace the constitutional system of government, and that Muslims believe anyone who is not Muslim is an infidel and therefore the enemy. She has said in numerous interviews that every "practicing Muslim who believes in the teaching of the Qur'an cannot be a loyal citizen of the United States of America."

During the hysteria and hate-filled rhetoric put forth during the summer of 2010 over the Park51 center, or the so-called "Ground Zero mosque" (which, in fact, was not on the Ground Zero site), Gabriel added to the frenzy by saying the center was a "project to advance Islam," and that Muslims chose this location "because of the symbol it represents to the Arabic world." Gabriel also has advised Representative Peter King (R-NY), who chaired the Congressional hearings on the radicalization of American Muslims.
