Recently Theologues asked me to contribute a few titles to their summer reading list. I thought I would include my selections here you you all. On top of these I have also been reading some Plato, Hume, and a few books by Michael Chabon (just finished this, and started this yesterday). There’s also my comps list too…. which I won’t put down in it’s entirety here, but I’m sure you’ll here about it soon. It’s not really “summer reading” as much as it is a never ending sense of anxiety looming over me. I’d love to hear what you’re reading this summer, and what you might recommend folks to read. Let me know in the comments.

Here are my Theologues selections

Chasing Francis: A Pilgrim’s Tale by Ian Morgan Cron
This book would be my “best beach read” for theology nerds. It’s a novel about a pastor who get’s burned out and digs into encountering God through the spirituality of St. Francis. I’ve written a fuller review here. It’s a well written book and really spoke to me as a former minister who turned to Franciscan spirituality in my own journey. I was deeply moved by this story.

Laudato Si’ by Pope Francis
Everyone has been talking about this one, why not get into the conversation. You can get it online for free (that’s how the Vatican rolls). I wrote down the 10 quotes from it which first struck me here. I’d love to heat what you think about it.

On Liturgical Asceticism by David Fagerberg
This is the one I’m reading right now. I love David Fagerberg’s writings. He is a former Lutheran who came into the Catholic Church after studying Eastern Orthodox liturgical theology (just like me). This book along with his earlier Theologia Prima are great reads to satiate the inner theology nerd.
