The best news ever; Angels: Day 177

The best news ever; Angels: Day 177 January 14, 2017

angels_john_chrysostom_3The birth of Christ, says St. John Chrysostom, is simply the best news ever. In an instant the world is changed, and we’re made close friends with the angels.

What news could ever be as good as this? God on Earth—man in Heav- en—and all mixed together: angels joined the choirs of men; men had fellowship with the angels, and with the other powers above! We see the long war ended, and God and our nature reconciled—the devil brought to shame, demons in flight, death destroyed, Paradise opened, the curse blotted out, sin put out of the way, error driven off, truth returning, the word of godliness planted everywhere, and flourishing in its growth, the city of those above planted on the earth, those pow- ers in safe association with us, and angels always visiting earth, and hope abundant for things to come!

–St. John Chrysostom, Homily 1 on Matthew,  3

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

In the Lord’s Incarnation, we are led to see “the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man” ( Jn. 1:51). Do I gratefully and eagerly take up this gift?

CLOSING PRAYER

Angel of God, you know the plan of salvation, the means by which God has divinized human flesh. Help me to live in my body the way the Lord lived in his, that I may know glory with him and with you forever.
