7 Powerful Bible Names of God with Meaning

God has many names mentioned in the Bible. Each one has a particular meaning.  What are some of the most powerful names of God and their associated meaning?

ELOHIM – God’s First Name Revealed

The first name that God revealed to us comes in the Book of Genesis.  It is ELOHIM and in Genesis 1:1 it refers to the Trinity for ELHOIM is plural and says “In the beginning God [ELOHIM] created the heavens and the earth.”  We know this is plural because when God created mankind, He said “Let Us make man in Our own image, according to Our likeness” (Gen 1:26a).  Notice that God said let “Us” make man in “Our” image.  If there were only One God then He would surely have said, “Let Me make man in My image” but He did not.  In fact in the account of creation all Three Persons of the Trinity were involved.   God’s name, ELOHIM could be thought of as a family name to give  you the idea that there is more than one.  My family name is Wellman.  We are one family but three persons.  Bad analogy I know but it is hoped that you might understand this concept better.  ELOHIM is God in Three Persons and is God’s name that is associated with Creation because the Psalmist wrote that “The heavens declare the glory of God[ELOHIM]” (19:1).

YHWH- I AM

This is the name revealed to Moses when Moses asked what name he should give to the Israelites if they asked what His name was.  This is the same title that Jesus used many times in the great “I AM’s” during His earthly ministry.  It is the “Self-Existent One.”  We are human beings but God is simply “Being” meaning He had no beginning and will He have no ending.  YHWH is a Tetragrammaton and contains no vowels.  In fact, God’s name was so holy that the Jews would not even dare to say it and even today, many Orthodox Jews will not even spell it out but prefer to spell it “G_d” because of their reverence for it.  God told Moses to tell them, “I AM that I AM” or I am the Self-Existent, Uncreated One meaning that “I have always been and will always be.”   Some Hebrew scholars believe it was spelled EHYEH but no one can say for certain and the pronunciation of this sacred name has been lost in time.  It could also be stated as “I AM HE WHO IS” (EX 3:14).   The Hebrew verb form of Hayah is “to be” so this is closely related to YHWH.

ADONAI – The Lord is Master

The Hebrew name ADONAI in English means Lord or Master.  It describes the Lordship of God over us as individuals.  Adon in the Hebrew means master, steward, overseer, or Lord.  In the context of the Old Testament ADONAI could be said to mean that God is our Master, our Overseer and our Lord. Jesus said that whoever you obey is your lord.  I could put it this way…if He is not Lord of all He is not Lord at all.  What I mean by this is that if you obey Him then He is your personal Lord but if you don’t obey Him, then He is not really your Lord and you are actually a child of the Devil and a vessel of wrath (Rom 2:8; Eph 2:3; John 3:35-36).  You cannot claim God as your Lord if you do not obey Him.  He is ADONAI – your Master – or He is not.  If He is not, then you presently have the wrath of God still abiding on you.

JEHOVAH JIREH – The Lord Will Provide

JEHOVAH JIREH is specifically speaking about salvation for in Genesis 22, God provided a ram to be sacrificed after the Angel of the Lord stopped the knife in Abraham’s hand from killing Isaac.  This was prophetic too because the Lord God would provide the Perfect and Supreme Sacrifice of the Lamb of God in Jesus Christ.  At the same spot where Abraham was willing to sacrifice his own son is the same place that God did sacrifice His One and Only Unique Son, Jesus Christ.  That place was where Calvary was!  It is not ironic but intentional.  The Lord provided for us Jesus Christ so that we could be restored to a right relationship with God that our sin had caused us to be separated.  Genesis 22:14 is literally translated in the Hebrew to read “And Abraham called the place ‘The-Lord-Will-Provide’[JEHOVAH JIREH] as it is said to this day, In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”  The “shall be” is prophetic and points to Christ Jesus thousands of years later and in that same spot where the Father would provide for us Jesus Christ Who gave His own life willingly just as Abraham was willing to give the life of Isaac.  This is why this is one of the most powerful names of God that He gives us.

EL SHADDIA – The Almighty God

EL is part of God’s name and when you add SHADDIA you are literally saying God Almighty or the God of the Mountains.  Mountains almost always refer to the nations in the Bible.  God is not only the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob but of the entire world…of all the nations.  This expresses the Omnipotence of God.  When Abraham and Sarah were past natural child-bearing age, God told Him that “I AM Almighty God [EL SHADDIA]” and that “those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty [EL SHADDIA]” (Psalm 91:1).  This is where EL SHADDIA is used and why the translators of the Hebrew used the word Almighty.  EL SHADDIA is sovereign over all the earth, over all the nations, over all things in fact.  The Almighty is mighty over all there is in the universe and in heaven which includes the angels, including Satan and the fallen angels (demons).

JEHOVAH SHALOM – The Lord is Peace

I like this one because it makes me think about Romans 5:1 which says “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we now have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”  Peace is good.  Wrath is not.  We had the wrath of God abiding on us until we repented, confessed our sins, and placed our trust in Christ.  The wrath of God was placed on Jesus for us if we have trusted in Him.  If we have not, God’s wrath still abides on us for “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him” (John 3:36).  That is why “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Rom 8:1). JEHOVAH SHALOM is used in Judges 6:24 where “Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace [JEHOVAH SHALOM]. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites.”   The Lord is Peace for those who are His own; otherwise He is opposed to you (James 4:6).

JEHOVAH ROHI – The Lord is my Shepherd

If you are not saved, then the Lord is not your Shepherd.  Jesus knows whose sheep are His own and He knows them by name and they know His voice (John 10:3-4).  If you are not of His flock, then He is not your Shepherd.  This is the name given by David when he wrote the 23rd Psalm.  If the Lord is your Shepherd [JEHOVAH ROHI], then He will make you to lie down in green pastures and not brown patches.  His rod (for protection) and His staff (for keeping the sheep in the flock) will comfort you.  If JEHOVAH ROHI is your Shepherd, then He will lead you to still (calm) waters and you can drink from the living water and you will never thirst again (John 7:37-39).  If He is your Shepherd then He will take you through the valleys of the shadow of darkness.  If there are shadows that means at least there is light somewhere near. Your Shepherd won’t take you out of the valleys, He won’t keep you from the valleys or He won’t make you pass around the valleys but He will take you through the valleys and not leave you there.  That is what the 23rd Psalm says.  He won’t keep us out of the valleys but He will take us through them and go with us through them in the path of His righteousness (2 Cor 5:21) and goodness and mercy will follow us as we walk in this path and this path will eventually bring us into the house of the Lord and there shall we dwell with Him forever and ever.  That is if he is your JEHOVAH ROHI or your Shepherd.

Conclusion

Maybe you have names of God which you prefer above those I have given.  If you do, you likely have personal reasons for them. Tell us what they are and why. Whichever name you prefer for God, you can pray to a God that is always willing to forgive you and to cleanse you from all your sins (1 John 1:9) however this forgiveness is conditional.  God gives mercy to those who repent of their sins and lifestyle, turn to Him and confess their sins, see their desperate need for the Savior, and place their trust in Christ Who alone can save (Acts 4:12).  There is no other way to be saved.  He is the only way to the Father (John 6:44).  In your prayer life, why not pray to Him in the many names given which are all descriptive attributes of His Holiness, Omnipotence (all powerful), Omnipresence (present everywhere) and Omniscience (all knowing).  Whatever your name is, Jesus will save you.  He is waiting.  Will you come to Him today and be saved while it is still called “today” (2 Cor 6:2)?

Boni you need to get in the word of God with a clear mind and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you personally what the word pf God is saying in all these verses. Have a blessed day

      • Jack Wellman

        Amen…well said my friend.

Also we need to be careful how we used the word (fool) because we can get ourselves into trouble with GOD. Sharing what one receive from reading the word of God does not make one to be a fool. The word of God is revealed to us differently and that`s how the Scripture comes in to play that says iron sharpens iron, because when we share His word with each other it widen our understanding.

Do not call someone a fool
(Matthew 5:22)–”But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.”

      Calling someone a fool
(Psalm 14:1)–”The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good.”
(Matthew 23:17)–”You fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold?”

I disagree, Genesis 1:26 does not mean God is plural. Yes it says let us make man in our image. But where does it say God is plural. God is talking to someone here. And if you look at the very next verse (Genesis 1:27) is states “HE proceeded to make man in HIS image.” So the actual creation was by a HIM not a THEM. Al of the trinitarian verses are so clouded that you would have to read it into them. Funny how the Jews never thought of a trinity reading that verse. However, 1 Corinthians 8:6 says there is ONE GOD THE FATHER. Never mentions anyone else. Also the bible says “There is ONE GOD and one MEDIATOR between God and man.” So Jesus mediates between God and man. Also, when Jesus prayed to God he said ” This means everlasting life, their coming to know YOU the only true God.” Never US the one true God. There are many more verses. Trinitarians try to create this “Fully God and Fully man”. Or they try “well Jesus was speaking as human here and God here,” Good show me where it says he would do that. The Catholic Church believed in the trinity and when protestant denominations broke away the retained it, and more sects, fellowships and all those formed while retaining this teaching. So when people like Jehovah’s Witnesses come along and are criticized for not believing in the trinity, they are accused of not being part of traditional Christianity and are proud to say so.

Actually Chris, you have a couple of errors in your post here. First, the passage in 1 Timothy 2:5 does not say “one” God “and” “one” Mediator. Rather it says, for one God, and one mediator God and man, man Jesus Christ (as translated directly from the Greek). Unfortunately, any translation you get from the Greek will also include interpretation. For example, I just said that the Greek says “and one mediator God and man” but I guess I should have said that the direct translation from the Greek is “one and mediator God and man.” From the context, and the Greek syntax, that phrase really stands out, identifying the mediator as both man and God, such as the phrase should probably read, “and one mediator, God and man.” There is no addition word to indicate the validity of adding the English word “between;” it is assumed and interpreted by translators. I would suggest, that “between” is erroneous, and because in the previous verse Paul has just stated that God is our Saviour, making the verse say (if you will allow me minor interpretation for translation), for God is one, and is one mediator, God and Man, the man, Christ Jesus, (6) who gave himself…..
Also, in saying that Elohim is not plural nor possibly Trinitarian, may be a little short sighted because of the following singular “him” and “his.” We do not have any ancient Israelite writings to identify what they thought or believed on that matter, however we do have, however, the apostles John and Paul. Both of which identify Jesus as the one who was directly active in the creative act (John 1:3 and Colossians 1:16). Seems pretty resolved, right? God – the Trinity – spoke saying “we” and “our” and then the Word of God (Jesus Christ, also as identified in the New Testament, in such places as Revelation) went and “he” created in “his” likeness.
      Just saying….

The Bible makes several mentions of God, Jesus (Son of God, God and Man), and of the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost, The Comforter, Helper, Paraclete, Encourager, Advocate) -John 16:7 New Living Translation. So I don’t know about anyone else but I clearly see three parts of God- God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

        • Cmamaroo

The Torah NEVER mentions Yeshua, ever. Anyone who says otherwise is entitled to their opinion. However, that belief is based on mistranslation of the original Hebrew text. He is not mentioned until the gospels. The extent of this mistranslation is very apparent by just looking at this article. The author has used several mistranslated references. If you’re really that interested in what the Torah actually says then check out the JPS translation. It’s much better than any Greek or latin text and MUCH more accurate than the KJV.

AND HIS JOY IS SO IMMENSE WHEN HE SEES US, ENJOYING HIS GIFT… WHEN YOU WANT TO HEAR GOD LAUGH… PLEASE HIM AND “THANK HIM FOR HIM…” >>>WITH YOU! CAN ANYONE DESCRIBE THE GREATEST OF GOD OUR CREATOR, HIM WHO MAKES THE PILLARS OF THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD FIXED AND SET IT ON ITS AXIS, AND CAUSED IT TO BE SUSPENDED IN MID AIR, AS IF HELD BY A INVISIBLE HAND… WHO ARE YOU MY GOD… REVEAL YOURSELF TO ME… SHOW ME WHO YOU REALLY ARE… TAKE THAT WHICH I DO NOT NEED, AWAY… AND GIVE ME WHAT I ONLY NEED… AND THIS WILL BE ENOUGH, OH LORD, THIS WILL BE ENOUGH. . . THANK YOU OH GOD MY CREATOR, EVEN OF ALL THE WORLDS KNOWN, TO BE DISCOVERED AND THOSE WE MAY NEVER KNOW, YOU ALONE POWER, POWERFUL, AND MANY, EVEN BEYOND COUNTING, THE KINDNESSES YOU HAVE SHOWN ME, I KNEW I WILL NOT SEE THEM UNTIL I LOOK IN YOUR EYES, FACE TO FACE, AND YOU WILL LET ME SEE ALL THE REVEALS OF MY HEART… I MUST BOW BEFORE MY LORD, I CANNOT STAND IN YOUR LOVE OF GRACE FOR ME, IT WILL COMPLETELY SWALLOW ME UP, AND FINALLY I WILL BE TRULY TOGETHER IN YOU, AND JOY NO WORDS COULD EXPRESS, AND HEALING I WANT TO BE WHOLE AS YOU ARE, NO MORE PAIN, NO MORE SORROW, NO MORE SOUL CRUSHING DISAPPOINTMENTS… ONLY JOY, YOUR PRESENCE AND SWEET ETERNAL FELLOWSHIP WE WILL TOGETHER SHARE… I MUCH HUG YOU NOW… I WILL SURELY BECOME UNDONE IF WE WAIT ANOTHER SECOND TO EXPRESS THE TRUTH OF LOVE’S SECRETS AND THE HEART’S DESIRE… WHAT IS THE FIRST HUG GOING TO BE LIKE? DO YOU KNOW, HONESTLY, DO YOU KNOW!!!

Discus, you don’t have to worry about the most Powerful Names of God. When you connect to HIM you will know. Moreover, the most POWERFUL REMEDY is to THANK HIM IN JESUS CHRIST AND THROUGH JESUS CHRIST and by the SUPREME POWER OF THE PRECIOUS HOLY BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST AND HIS RESURRECTION.

that God has many names in our different needs.I’m so blessed today knowing the different names of our Creator our Savior.I’m so surprised of the reaction of Boni yet I know God has a purpose in everything.

  • Raul Perez McSaint

According to archaeological findings the names El-Elyon, or “God Most High”, and Yahweh are ancient Ugarfitic/Canaanite Pagan gods, and wsas amalgamated into one deity after the 2nd temple was built, and their fusion was made by the post exilic Jewish diaspora to produce a hellenistic monotheistic religion knwo today as Judaism!

    • Patricia Shavers

“I am that I am.” That says it all. Those who think they can put God in an anthropomorphically context are not able to a accept that God is so far from human comprehension awe is all we can conclude. How foolish we puny humans are that God could be fully understand the awesomeness of God. The tiny planet we call Earth orbiting the moderately sized star called our sun in a relatively medium sized galaxy we live in can no more conceive of an all powerful being we call in our relatively recent English language God is a disrespect for his awesome reality … stand in awe … that is true respect for the force that is responsible for all that was, all that is and all that will be.

  • Raul Perez McSaint

If they are names of Pagan gods if I were made to continue, therefore the Christian Holy Trinity is based on ancient Trinitarian pagan traditions, from Egypt, India, and ancient mythological sources!!! This is ia false god!

  • christonlyalways

I think the Trinity can be a difficult concept for our human minds to imagine, but I would like to share something that I heard on the topic, to offer another perspective. “God in three Persons” does not mean that there are three separate Gods. The sun of our solar system is one ball of flaming gas. But, you will agree that it has three distinct and separate aspects. It is Light, Heat, and Radiation, all at once! When we refer to the sun, we mean the sun as a whole, singular object. The same can be said of a tooth. It is enamel, bone, and dentin. Three parts, one whole. God created many natural things in our world that are three parts in one, and I believe it is for the purpose of allowing us to see the natural pictures of the Trinity.
God is One and The only One. But He is also Three in One.

    • guests

I don’t believe the bible teach about trinity

    • Ocea B. Rice

Consider this, GOD IS NOT A TRINITY, BUT A “TRIUNE GOD” … study what this means, and I feel certain you’ll have even more insight to the deeper things of GOD… especially what his character is by his very makeup that deeply reveals HIS SUPERNATURAL NATURE… certainly!
