Why Christians Must Love Muslims

There are biblical reasons that believers should love Muslims, while there is no room for hate.

Enemies of God

The Apostle Paul never did try to tiptoe around the Word of God. He said, “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly” (Rom 5:6), and so, “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom 5:8). Even more incredibly, “while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life” (Rom 5:10). Since God died for ungodly, wicked sinners who were His enemies, how can we not love others in a way that proves that we are Jesus’ disciples? Jesus said it is by our love for one another that people will know we are His disciples (John 13:34-35). Since Jesus died for us when we certainly didn’t deserve it, how can we ever call someone an enemy? We used to be one! We must look at people the way God looks at people, and we know from Scripture that “desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1st Tim 2:4), so we should pray that “God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth” (2nd Tim 2:25b). A person’s positon in life, skin color, religion, or national origin, should never matter to the believer in Christ. God is no respecter of persons and He doesn’t regard one over another, and neither should we.

The Unlovable

Who among us is loveable? I mean loveable to God? The Apostle Paul doesn’t rank peoples and nations, but rather puts us all in the same category, writing, “None is righteous, no, not one” (Rom 3:10), and “no one understands; no one seeks for God” (Rom 3:11), in fact, not just you and me, but “All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one” (Rom 3:12). Paul says with authority that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23). That certainly levels the playing field of humanity. None are good and certainly not good enough to work their way to heaven, so we must learn to look at people differently, and that means Muslims are not our enemies any more than atheists, Buddhists or Hindus are. We are no better than they, and they are no better than we. The only difference is God saved us, but He is saving others too, including those who have come out of various world religions but also out of atheism and agnosticism.

Dreams and Visions

In many cases, where missionaries can’t go, Jesus has appeared in dreams and visions to people of various faiths around the world, including the Islamic faith. It doesn’t matter to God where someone is. He can move heaven and earth to save one soul, and we know it’s His will that none should perish, and that includes Muslims. Many former Muslims have come to know the Jesus of the Bible…the Son of God Who died for their sins…cleansing all who would trust in Him. There are certainly concerns about Sharia Law taking over certain areas of the nation, but the vast majority of Muslims are not terrorists and we shouldn’t treat all Muslims as if they are. That’s looking at the outside and not the heart, as God does (1st Sam 16:7). Many Muslims who immigrated to the U.S. or Canada have done so to escape Sharia Law or the radical elements of Islamic extremists. They are tired of the violence, and so when they are exposed to Jesus as He truly is (like in the gospel of John), they see that He teaches that we are to be praying for our enemies, doing good to those who do bad to us, and blessing those who curse us (Matt 5:44; Luke 6:28). That’s Jesus’ way and it must be our way too if we are to be His disciples and hope to be used by God to lead some to Christ. The love of God is a powerful magnet to Muslims, and our love for them should act in the same way.

Why Muslims?

Undoubtedly, God has been calling many former Muslims into the church. They too are created in the image of God (Gen 1:26-27), and God has “made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place” (Acts 17:26), and He created all the nations so “that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us” (Acts 17:27). As Paul said, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal 3:28), “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise” (Gal 3:29). The children of God are the children of God, not because of sex, color, national origin, or former religion. They become the children of God when they trust in the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Remember that Abraham was a pagan when God called Him and the Apostle Paul was the church’s arch enemy, imprisoning and killing Christians, but God saved him. This shows that the worst of sinners can be saved, and that’s why grace is so very amazing. Why try to witness to Muslims? We’re told to go into all the world, and not just certain people groups (Matt 28:18-20). Why not Muslims, or Buddhists, or atheists, or anyone you see? Even the Jews will be restored to a right relationship with God, and the day will come when “Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of the Lord. Thus says the Lord of hosts: In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue shall take hold of the robe of a Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you’” (Zech 8:22-23).

If we are fearful or afraid to even talk to a Muslim, then we’re taking the wrong approach and we must be uneducated about Muslims, but we’re also having a memory lapse, because we too were once an enemy of God (Rom 5:10). Our true enemy is the one we should be concerned about. He’s a powerful and yet invisible enemy that truly is an enemy ours (Eph 6), but even he and his minions can’t keep us from God (Rom 8:37-39), and someday that enemy will face the judgment of God (Rev 20:10). Muslims are not our enemies, they are people that God wants to save and is saving and, and by our love and prayers for them, God might possibly use us as a means to save some.

Every time I think you can’t possibly write something more stupid you stun me! This clearly is the most stupid, insane, absurd, ridiculous idiotic collection of ignorant words, falsehoods, nonsense and derangement you’ve ever penned.

Go to Pakistan and preach this idiotic bullshit and send back a video of your bloody corpse.

Islam IS AN ENEMY OF HUMANITY just like your delusional cult is.

  • Jack Wellman

Pud, the Internet already goes to Afghanistan, but thankfully you are not a reflection on most who don’t believe, because most atheists or agnostics or people of other faiths don’t use such sophomoric comments or use filthy language.

    • pud

Well here’s some more….I’m leaving your stupid as dog shit site…no more “blessings” from me.Enjoy the couple of fellow idiots who nod like dimwits at all your drivel as you mutually support your common dementia. I’m done here. This was the last straw…I don’t give a shit what you or your cult following do or think anymore. You are a fucking lunatic. You’re mentally ill, deranged, delusional, infantile, sterile of mind, blind as a bat, willfully ignorant and it’s obvious you are fucking hopeless. When you use your stupid cult and demented book as justification to embrace the most VILE ideology on earth…the low IQ muslim psychopaths… hell bent on dominating the world and subjugating every living soul who doesn’t bow or covert…There is no fucking hope for you EVER! It, you, muslims, your book are REPUGNANT! Go fuck yourself jack…you’re a child abusing pathetic mentally vacuous piece of shit. You are little different than the psychotic mulim apocalyptic death cult…you’re every bit the coward (can’t debate me) every bit the brain destroyer of children, every bit the retarded book believing idiot, bigot and plague on humanity that they are. Fuck you jack, your invisible non existent gods, devils, angels, demons, bleating absurd praying and your entire wasted useless life. You and yours are a pox and have been for thousands of years.

I gave this my best shot….to pull you out of the sewer of stupidity you’re wedged in head down. Impossible. I’m outta here. You’re a coward, an idiot, a pussy, a loser, liar and fraud. Now run along and do 10 hours of heavy praying and begging before you indoctrinate a few more virgin minds at sunday school filling them with guilt and shame and offering them your false hope magic if they only believe stupidity!. I’m done…I have a rich life to lead and you are a hopeless moronic totally iredeemable waste of protoplasm, a festering sore, a contributor to the destruction of civilization worse than ebola and one of the most stupid faux humanoids I’ve ever encountered. Everyone who reads your brainless irrational shit is more stupid because of it..everyone whose ever come to this site is more dumb because of you.

      Cheers asshole!

    • pud

The vast majority of Afgans cannot read or write you stupid fuck. WiFi is very poor in Taliban caves and since females are not allowed to attend school I doubt they are browsing “christian crier” on the latest Ipad….you are unbelievably STUPID!

While I can’t speak to whether or not Taliban or Wahabi muslims use “filthy language” (cover your ears you tender pussy) I’m quite confident if your sorry ass went there preaching your stupid book they would cut your balls off as soon as look at you.

The real irony (that you’ll never get because you are so willfully delusional and stupid) is that the muslims worship the same imaginary made up god as you do. Funny wouldn’t you agree that 1.2 billion people don’t see it quite the way you do in your Kansas backwater.

It could be successfully argued that they are far more devout than your bumpkin ass seeing as they are happy to fly planes into buildings and throw acid in little girls faces before they cut off their genitals and you still haven’t divested of all your worldly goods to me as your savior ordered. Hypocrite!

You do have one thing more in common…a hatred of gays and jews. Oh and a “belief” in the physically impossible nonsensical bullshit of your respective “holy” books.

I am the perfect reflection of rational people who reject your abhorrent infantile faith only I’m not afraid of ridiculing what is arguably the most stupid world views ever embraced by the most stupid people who have ever lived.

You are the most cowardly piece of shit I’ve ever encountered online. The most possessed and obsessed imbecile to ever pen absurdities and derive his living by lying to children.

      Now I’m done.

  • Basement Berean

Well, I reserve the right to “love” Muslims on a case by case basis, from the relative safety of America, but what concerns me more is that from what I read below, this could be the last of pud!

    • bereanresearcher

Perhaps pud is gone by its own volition. Who knows. Surely by his cursing he will be removed by Patheos Channel?

      • Basement Berean

I’ve seen way worse on Patheos.

        • bereanresearcher

Oh my I generally don’t read past the Christian Crier.
I do get the Evangelical Channel Patheos Newsletter.

          • Basement Berean

Well then, you need to experience the “Progressive Christian” channel.

          • bereanresearcher

OH? just the name of it sounds pretty nasty. Progressive Christian? Is that like a Progressive DemonRat? or the “liberation” theologists? If so uck.

          • Basement Berean

Well, I just pulled up the latest “Slacktivist” (August 6th) and just for fun loaded all the comments and did a search for f-bombs and found six. Then I searched for “s__t” and found eight.

In general, I’ve found the Progressive Christian channel to be the home of the edgy social justice warrior type who is so right in their own eyes about everything that they can be as vile as they please in the way they express themselves. But, best experience it for yourself. It’s just a few mouse clicks away.

          • bereanresearcher

Gee I hope our hopefully PUD / D}ck is right at home there now. He/she/it who cannot prove they are human said they were through with Christian Crier. Remains to be seen. The demented excessive/compulsives are addicted to hate…. Carry on I like your moniker 🙂

          • Apolloone

I have no doubts that these so-called Progressive Christians are part of the Laodiceans. It would be most interesting to hear their answer if they were asked about the Laodiceans, most likely their answer would be: “who are the Laodiceans”?The Book of Revelation is ignored by many Christians today.

          • bereanresearcher

I couldn’t agree more. I temporarily went to one of these “cheap grace” churches. You know there is no black and white, no yea – yea, nay-nay. Lots of shades of grey. No we are either loyal and do the whole Word or we do not.
Example it is OK for kids to come into the church with Halloween customs and collect candy. Even saw a little 4 yr old witch. What is THAT? I got no answer even though I presented verse after verse against sorcery.
We are back at our firmly Biblical Christian Church of The Way now. Blessed to be here! It is a tiny old church but with spot on theology.
Another group who will hear depart from me and be spat out are the wolves in sheep’s clothing the in it for the money “Evangelical Leaders.: TV, electronic media, and print commercialists.
The Alpha and Omega is hardest on these two types of “christians” Even harder on them than the atheists and the agnostics. Just in His first Advent, the Sadducees and Pharisees. Saint Paul made no bones about it either.
May God have mercy on the lost!

          • Apolloone

Progressive Christians? I have no doubts that these professing Christians are part of the Laodiceans.

  • Jack Wellman

Poor pud. You have such deep seated issues my friend, but oh how you pass out blessings.

    • pud

My “issues” don’t include making a living lying to children, willful self delusion, willful ignorance, purposeful deception of others, psychopathy, infantile beliefs, gross stupidity, cowardice, gullibility, credulity, cognitive dissonance…who has issues pastor lunatic?

  • Doug Barron

Thank you for this article, Pastor!
Indeed; you are correct Muslims are brothers, and they need the good news also. The sons of Ishmael are half brothers of Issac, and Father promised to make them into a great people; which they are today! Jesus indeed came and redeemed the sons of Ishmael also. Those who follow the violent teachings of Mohammed in violence and sharia must be dealt with. But; the door Jesus opened for all we cannot close. The door is open, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it, despite the accuser’s, and man’s best efforts! Ignore the imps. It is time to move forward!
Good work and word, Pastor Wellman! Psalm 91 is a word for you!
On another note; I was glad to see that you study under Dr. McGee. TTBR is world wide, even in the Mohammadan lands. That is wonderful! He has been one of my esteemed Rabbi’s for 35 years now! Shabbat Shalom!

    • Jack Wellman

Thank you sir. What you say is so on point sir. Jesus would turn none away that came to Him (John 6:37-39), so we should not do differently. One enemy that convinced me, although Saul-to-Paul was a huge one,was the man in the mirror…a former enemy of God Who God sent the Son of God to die for me (Rom 5:10) & many others (Mark 10:45).

      • pud

“a former enemy of God Who God sent the Son of God to die for me”

        Human sacrifice= sick fucking mind

god sent himself as a blood sacrifice to himself= sick fucking delusional irrational stupid mind

        You are a psychotic lunatic

        • Doug Barron

Thanks for the grown up fourth grade vernacular. That really adds to the conversation!

          • pud

So says the other fully engaged mental case. There is no conversation with you fucking lunatics. You are cowards and intellectual pussies. You and pastor worthless have NEVER challenged me, never countered my arguments, never defended yourselves when I point out your insanity. You are too fucking far gone, too fully indoctrinated, too intellectually cut off from reality to have conversation. You have stage 4 mental cancer and there is no stage 5

      • Doug Barron

VERY well said and true. The man in the mirror is the one that is the hardest to look at. We see him and wonder why we could ever be loved. Then we open the Word, and we are told why!

  • Doug Barron

    To all:
To feed the avatar; “pud” is to feed an emotional vampire. Once you stop feeding it what it desires; then it dies.
I have stopped feeding it. It thrives on negative strokes, as it cannot garner any positive strokes. Negative strokes are always better than no strokes at all, as; at least the vampire gets SOME sustenance, even from negative attention. Ignoring such a one diminishes it’s self percieved importance, and renders it impotent.
When a lion roars, and no one pays attention to the lion because the lion has no teeth; what does the toothless lion eventually do? It is powerless. It has no power. Only we can give it power.
A lion roars; not because he is on the hunt, but; because he is injured or incapacitated.
Such is this self supposed lion.

    “Enemies of God
The Apostle Paul never did try to tiptoe around the Word of God.”

    I forgot….

This completely epitomizes how incredibly delusional, warped, stupid and fucked up in the head you are….

A (made up) “god” who speaks universes into existence CANNOT have “enemies” you babbling idiot. This is akin to a human claiming that ladybugs are his enemy and are waging celestial warfare against him. How can you be so out of your skull with your sense of proportion? You live in a fantasy world of make believe nonsense…total ridiculous imagery of titanic forces at odds with each other like a Lord of the Rings movie. This is psychotic. Monsters, demons, good vs evil, giant gods and devils with horned beasts and lakes of fire are fine for fantasy movies but a clear sign of a mental illness when believed to be the nature of reality. You are one fucked up dude.

“paul” was NOT an apostle you brain dead moron. He was a religious lunatic and murderer like Charles Manson who lead a cult like Manson did, who never witnessed a single god damn thing and suffered psychotic visions! This is who you model your entire world view around? Only a psychotic cult member could defend this, only a truly mentally deranged person could idolize such a foul diseased lunatic as your “paul”

The buybull IS NOT the words of a god…unless said “god” is so stupid, so deranged so evil that he can contradict himself a thousand demonstrable times, commit routine acts of genocide, need constant ego strokes and adoration to appease his tender fragile emotional state…all of which are by definition character traits IMPOSSIBLE for a “god” to have and be called a “god” You stupid stupid simple minded loser.

The book you worship was manufactured! What went into it was voted on by deranged religious zealots who could not agree among themselves what to believe. It was scripted and edited and concocted by MEN…stupid barbaric ignorant MEN like you! It was not written or inspired by any benevolent deity or there would be no need for shit for brains preachers and pastors as EVERYONE on earth would recognize it for absolute perfection and truth.

At first it is all offensive, then, as time progresses, the cacophany becomes just part of the landscape, just as the magnet on a refrigerator door is ignored. It’s still there..but so what? People just become accustomed to walking around the idiot because the person is not worth the time of even the police to deal with.

In the Book of Job there are recordings concerning certain stars, another Sun, facts about the Earth’s oceans, just to mention a few things, these recordings were recorded thousands of years ago when it was impossible for man to know what was beneath the oceans, only recently the recordings in the “Book of Job” about Earth’s oceans have been proven factual, at least one atheist astronomer became a believer in Yahweh [God] after making a discovery about Orion that was recorded thousands of years ago, how could the writer of Job know such things?, the atheist astronomer who became a believer stated that the information had to come from the creator. BTW the Sun I mentioned is Arcturus and his sons [smaller suns], this sun is Vastly Larger that our Sun, while our’s travels, I think 12 miles a second, Arcturus travels 257 miles a second. I do believe if I were an Atheist and if I read the Book of Job I would definitely become a believer.

The true followers of The Way encounter to put it mildly push back saying None of the Bible is true, can’t be proved, etc. That flies in the face of what science and Biblical Archaeology is telling us.

Enjoy these articles on Bible History Daily

You can get free eBooks here also such as a really good one on Jesus.

Enjoying reading Pastor Jack’s articles and reading and wonderful to speak with followers of the Way here such as Doug and Basement Berean.

I agree with Basement Berean on the hordes that indeed invade Europe 2 times.
Really it would be a better title using the word Arab rather than Muslim.
There some turning and converting as well as the ancient peoples such as the Copts.

“Muslim” can and does interchange with Islam. This is a whole other sort than Jesus was speaking of. The hardcore will indeed keep worshipping Allah another name for satan.

Allow God the Father claim His children and allow the Holy Spirit to turn the evil (not the lost, the evil IF it is His will.) There is indeed a difference) while the rest of us go into the field and plant Seed. May we help in the Harvest of low hanging fruit prepared for us to reach because they are prepared to turn to see and listen to The Truth.

Love BAS. Really great newsletter. More and more sites are being unearthed that prove the veracity of The Bible. Best HIStory book ever written.

Until I was saved from above it held no luster for me. Once I committed myself to following The Way, Truth, and Life the Bible came alive!
I asked myself as I was reading it for the first time cover to cover why didn’t you read this before? Imagine just how much smoother my life would have gone my first 50 years.

The Prophet Daniel was so accurate that the Mockers and the Scoffers were convinced he wrote after it already happened but when the Dead Sea Scrolls were found they went silent because they proved beyond any doubt they were written long before. Daniel was told that knowledge and travel would increase during this era we’re in now, we know this is the era because Israel is back as a nation, just think man’s fastest way of traveling was by horse or by sails and oars for thousands of years and then like magic, Jets, Automobiles, Trains, Luxury Liners. Etc. is it just a coincidence that a prisoner wrote about this over twenty five hundred years ago, this prisoner just happened to write about the people of the world would have increase in knowledge. Think about the odds and there are many, many more prophecies that have come to pass

          • pud

There are NONE. Demonstrate one…in exacting detail so that there is no doubt that it is a SPECIFIC event at a SPECIFIC time that was predicted in advance and can’t be accounted for by any other means….GL stupid!

        • Apolloone

Hello Berean: I can say the same thing about my life being much smoother as well Berean. As you know a prisoner by the name of Daniel was told about there would be an increase in knowledge, the Prophet Daniel was also told about an increase in travel. No wonder Daniel was told “go your way Daniel” can you imagine trying to explain to Daniel all the methods we have for traveling. And knowledge; we can learn so much by clicking a few keys on a computer, talk to and see people all around the globe, take a picture on a phone and deliver it to the farthest point in the world in seconds. Every answer given to Daniel he would have another question on the same subject(}:-) Just more coincidences right Pud?

          • bereanresearcher

One thing I have become aware of lately Daniel established the “Wise men’s” order. He had a vast treasury saved from his position as second in command as it were and chief advisor to Neb. The riches brought to the Holy Family by the astronomer/mathematicians were being saved for the occasion that was to come over 1500 years later.
I am NOT a prophet or prophetess but it is abundantly clear we are seeing an abundance of Biblical events unfolding before our very eyes.
We are allowed to see the signs of the times. Not to predict or add, delete, or change especially Revelation. The Olivet Discourse is easier to understand and plainly stated by Jesus during His Advent.
I am ready to meet the Lord when He comes with His Great Cloud of Witnesses should I still be on earth and look forward to meeting Him in all His Shekinah Glory should my soul be released from this aging physical body prior to His return.
Live in HOPE always and persevere.
My two favorite Chapters of the Bible are Romans 8 and John 17. The last few verses of John 17 are specifically written to cheer us.

The one who can’t prove he/she/it exists lied saying it would go away. Interesting the rest of us are accused of lying by it.

Ah well. I do feel sorry for it as an it is completely consumed with hate.
It calls for proof. We give supply and of course is ignored by it and we are called very nasty names.

Whatever… we are afforded this time of blessing.

An Arab historian wrote about Muhammad and his initial thoughts on the entity that he met in the desert who gave him information concerning his maker, according to this historian Muhammad believed this being was Satan, but his Catholic wife and family convinced him it was an angel from God. I agree with Muhammad’s first thoughts on that being. “If they say to you I [Jesus] am in the desert believe it not” No way would Jesus some six hundred years later give someone a message 180 degrees apart from what He taught.

      • bereanresearcher

Yes, A, absolutely on all counts. We in the West and even in Europe do not understand the d*mnation of ISLAM and the Muslims as they directly worship satan.
Now Arabs, this is a different story. We are seeing miracles all over the world that Arabs are coming to Jesus Iesous Y’shua in increasing numbers. He comes to them in their sleep, He or His Heavenly Angels show people they will meet who will come beside them to teach the Gospel. Those ready to sow Seed at just the precise moment as they are ripe in the field.
Love Open Doors for this! We also are seeing a real resurgence of the true Tribes of Judah and Benjamin along with their Levites being awakened to become Messianic Jews.
Many call themselves Jews and are not. A Hebrew is not necessarily a Jew. Zionist today are NOT Spiritual Israel they may reside in the country of Israel but are not co-inheritors of Heaven.
I am amazed at people who are still not awakened. My goodness look all around us! How depressing and hopeless it is not to have the assurance that there is eternal life and only One Way to it. A, and others here join me in this:
Father God, we give you all praise and thank you for saving us from the penalty of our Sins by the propitiation of Your Son on the Cross. Father if it be your will use us as your servants to go into the field and sow Your Son’s Seed. In Your Son’s Name Jesus Iesous Y’shua, Christ Christos. Amen.

  • Thanks be to God that there are still Christians who actually believe what the Bible says: that Jesus came for and wants to love all through us. The fear and hate of Muslims that so many Christians are given over to right now is not of God. It grieves me tremendously.

The only thing I’d add is that Jesus wants us to love Muslims and treat them as human beings and friends and loved ones *whether or not* they come to faith in Jesus. Love must be unconditional. We love because Jesus saud to, period. And saving is God’s work, not ours.

Thanks for this piece. It is crazy to me that it’s countercultural in the church right now to say, “Jesus wants you to love Muslims.”

    • Jack Wellman

Thank you my friend, and yes, you are right. This is the way Jesus was…His love was a radical love, loving the unlovable and those no one else would love, but then I see He loved me, and think, “Why shouldn’t I love others because I too was an enemy of God at one time” (Rom 5:10). Thank you for the encouragement Rebecca.

Exodus 23:33. “They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.”

2 Corinthians 6:16-18And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”

1 John 2:22 “Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.”

2 John 9-11 “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.”

      • Jack Wellman

All out of context to this subject, so thank you anyway, but these don’t help prove your point that we should not love Muslims so that they might become the children of God and be Muslim no more.

    • Strongs119

Multifaith diversity is condemned in Exodus 23:33. Both 2 John 9-11 and 2 Corinthians 6:16-18 instruct Christians to separate themselves from the followers of non-Christian religions. Luke 19:27 “But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.1 John 2:22 states that those who deny that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, meaning the followers of non-Christian religions and atheists, are antichrists.

      • Jack Wellman

This is not about approval of Islam but of loving our enemies as commanded by Christ Who even prayed for God to forgive those who were nailing Him to the cross. Muslims are created in the image of God as much as Jews and Christians are. Read the Old Testament verses about how God desires the Gentiles be saved, and they will, as long as they trust in Christ and love shows who Jesus’ true disciples are (John 13:34-35) and this love can reflect God’s love, and we know God desires that none perish apart from Christ. The verses you quoted are not about Jews, Muslims, or anyone but those who are to be stewards of what God has given them, and if anything, is referencing the self-righteous Jews of the day so please consider context before using a verse out of context to make a pretext. Do you not wish the Muslims be saved & trust in Christ and then become the children of God and Muslims no more?

  • Virtual Blue

Not to be difficult, but personally I think love must be a two sided thing.

Then again, people use the term “love” in so many different contexts that it kind of loses a lot of its definition.

But not fearing others is a good start. Then maybe some dialogue. You can talk about love after that hurdle I think.

    • Paperboy_73

The second command is not “love your neighbour as yourself if and only if they love you back too”.

It’s a command we break every day, but it’s right there in the book.

      • Virtual Blue

The main problem is that the neighbour in question has to follow the same rule for that to work or the idea breaks down.

Maybe if we can remove the ignorance and the irrational hate by getting together and having a good talk without any name calling I hope we might get to that stage.

The definition of neighbour is a bit problematic of course.
A bit to locational, too much “the person living next to me”.

I like the Dutch version I read that says “naaste” better.
It kind of means nearest in the sense of “the people you see/the people that live around you” .
        Makes it more widely applicable.

        • Paperboy_73

Quibbling over “neighbour” is missing the point. Luke has “love one another as you love yourself”.

This isn’t a verse with loopholes. Love your neighbour. Love your enemies. Love everyone in between without condition or expectation. This is clearly a part of Jesus’ message, woven throughout the gospels. If you’re trying to wave it away through loophole abuse, then why bother with Christianity at all?

The answer to “should I love this person?” is always “yes”. In every circumstance, even when it feels impossible. Christianity can be hard, but in this case at least, the answer is easy. When your neighbour (or one another, if you prefer) doesn’t love you back? Love them. Anyone can love people who love them back – that doesn’t tell anyone that you’re a Disciple of Christ. It’s only though doing what is difficult that we can show our colours.

          • Virtual Blue

I do not agree, sorry to say.
Unconditional love towards someone that does not reciprocate the feelings never end well.

There always need to be some base conditions that people agree on for it to work.

I have tried to unconditionally love a bully that regularly attacked me at school but that did nothing to stop him attacking me.

          • Paperboy_73

Jesus didn’t ask whether it was going to end well when he healed the soldier whose ear Peter cut off.

It’s not about whether it “ends well”. Often doing what God commands of us doesn’t end well. Sometimes people take advantage of your generosity. They test your patience and they abuse your compassion. They take your love and give none back in return. At no point are we to stop begin generous, patient, compassionate, or loving.

What God commands us to do is not necessarily what benefits us in the here-and-now. It’s what benefits our souls in the long-term.

With that said, I’m truly sorry about your bullying. It’s an incredibly difficult situation to live through, and loving someone who wrongs you is one of the hardest things in the world to do. We all find people for whom loving is just too much of a challenge – we’re failing to meet God’s standard, but everyone fails to meet God’s standard somewhere. That is why we seek forgiveness and try some more.

I’m not going to tell you how you should have acted, or how you “should” love this bully. I will say that you can love someone from a distance, and you shouldn’t consider God’s command to be forcing you to stand in harm’s way. Your safest bet is to avoid them and pray for them (meaningfully – sincere prayer is a very high form of love).

          • Virtual Blue

Jesus was following the script that was prepared even before he was born.

Trying to love the people who hit me and made my life a living hell every day at school and trying to follow the “turn the other cheek “advice my teacher gave me panic attacks, social phobia and a deep distrust of anyone who is trying to be nice to me.

I started believing that it must have been my fault because following the “good advice” didn’t make it stop.

I have lost about 25 years of my life to living in a semi-permanent state of fear. Praying didn’t help. Preachers just had platitudes and told me to read scripture.

Nobody who had the power to do so punished the bullies.
Most of them have happy lives now.

Finally deciding to talk to my mom and getting some professional help did the trick and now I’m improving every year.

Trying to love someone who wronged you is the hardest thing to do because it is unnatural and ties your feelings up in horrible knots that will scar you deeply.

It does not help you and it even benefits the persons who wrong you.

Is this the same advice we would give a spouse bing beat up by her husband?
A child raped by someone who it should have been able to trust without question?
To someone who lot a loved one at the hands of some robber?

In those cases forgiveness is possible, perhaps even tolerance if the other shows remorse, but love is just a step too far.

I will reserve love for people who are willing to return it thank you.

” I will say that you can love someone from a distance, and you shouldn’t
consider God’s command to be forcing you to stand in harm’s way.”

The better option is to ignore them from a distance and try to sort out your own life and find people who actually are worth loving in the limited time we have here on earth.

And I don’t believe the command is meant to put yourself in harms way, it only works like that when you don’t realise that love is probably a mistranslation resulting into a too strong word being used.

I feel it is an idea how to make your society work better by actually trying to understand and appreciate the people in it and the people in the next village over etc etc.

If all people try to do that you get a friendlier society without the “fear of what is other”.

So no gossip, no jealousy, no unreasonable dislike and being willing to help them in need.

That is how I use it. And it works really well.

Do whatever you want to do but please think for a moment of what you might be to people if you feed them this bit of scripture.

          • Paperboy_73

It’s clearly not a mistranslation. It’s a recurring theme that ties in throughout every part of the gospels, and appears directly many times. If you’re willing to accept that the second greatest of all commands is a mistranslation, then what can you believe?

That said, I am terribly sorry for your situation. That’s an incredibly difficult thing to live though, and I can’t begin to imagine the scars that it has left. I’m glad you decided to get professional help – there is a terrible trend in Christianity of stigmatising mental health issues and treatment, and I’m sincerely glad to hear that it has had a positive impact on your life. I honestly wish you every positive outcome.

          • Virtual Blue

If it isn’t a mistranslation of a word that had multiple meanings then it is, for all intents and purposes, impossible to follow for anyone less than a saint, making it a bit silly as a rule.

Why set tasks nobody can ever hope to really achieve and make people think they are not good enough?

That is all that I have to say on it.

Ans yes, I encountered that trend you speak of.

Quite a few of my Christian friends now talk to me in that careful voice reserved for idiots and small children.
It feels like they think might suddenly explode or murder them in their sleep or do something.

A lot of love thy neighbour going on there I assure you.

          • Paperboy_73

The point that God has standards that are unattainably high, and impossible for any fallible human, is one of the most important ideas in Christianity. It is an ideal that humans will necessarily fail to reach, which is the reason why they must seek forgiveness, which is the reason for the Jesus’ sacrifice, death, and resurrection. Human failure is part of the bigger picture.

I want to reiterate though that I am very sorry for the way you have been treated. I hope that the stigma surrounding mental health issues in the church eventually disappears, but to be honest, they’re a long way behind the times. There’s no stigma in going to visit a doctor to sort out your body, and nor should there be any stigma in visiting a therapist to sort out your mind. I would like to offer encouragement – for what little that is worth – you are doing the right thing, and you will not regret it at all.

          • Virtual Blue

Imagine that a teacher or parent would have rules like that:

“I set you these goals you can never ever reach so I know you will fail endlessly and cannot help to feel inferior and miserable.”
“This is in part because some ancestor of yours once stole an apple from me. Incidentally he an his girl did not know that is was a bad thing to do at the time because I had not told them what that meant yet.
“Then I want you to ask for forgiveness for the thing I already knew you would never be able to do in the first place.”
“If you don’t I will love you in the hot, hot cellar forever because I love you.”

Sounds strange somehow. Why would any loving being set things up like that.

How depressing that must be to fail and fail again and again without ever succeding. I wonder what that does to someones mind.
Oh wait I do, that is why I sought help when it got to hard to live with.

And I know I’m not regretting it because it was my own decision.
As was trying to attain impossible goals set for me by others.

          • Doug Barron

Corrie Ten Boom forgave and learned to love her captors that imprisoned her and slaughtered her family. She is tough. I admit I would have a hard time with that. But she loved with Jesus’ love.
I MUST forgive; and even love; so I do. Though; I do realize that some folk are so toxic that I can’t be in proximity of them.
In deciding how to decide this: lots of hearing the Holy Spirit; and visualizing in my own mind: in eternity; are we all living just down the street from the one we despise? Or just next door? Hmmm..
I try to be like the little Jewish woman. It’s HARD most days!
I really like to judge. It makes me feel better about my own fault filled life!

          • Virtual Blue

Being forced to forgive people just because your religion tells you to is quite silly and probably harmful.

If you don’t forgive people out of your own free will because you feel it benefits you to do so but because it is a “sin” not to forgive people is possibly harmful.

Whatever happened has already damaged the victim mentally an physically and there comes religion beating him/her around the head with the idea that you MUST forgive them or be a sinner and even LOVE them or you are a sinner adding more psychic stress and damage if the person is incapable of doing any forgiving at that very time.

This could possibly lead to a lower self image (“I must be a bad person because I can’t forgive them”) and even depression (“I must be an even worse person than who harmed me because I cant forgive them”).

Not a healthy thing, thoughts like that lead into a spiral of self loathing and possibly suicide. I’ve been there, that is why I’m so hot on the subject.

People must be allowed to work trough those kind feelings on their own or with some help if they want it.
This often helps them realise what motivated the perpetrator to do whatever they did, and maybe understand them a little.
If they want to forgive someone after that, no problem.

But by constantly admonishing people that they MUST forgive others no matter what and that they must so it immediately or possibly be punished by god later is punishing the victim in my worldview.

Also: just forgiving a perpetrator an also lead to the criminal/law breaker/bully to walk away scot free to continue harming others (and perhaps the same person) without any chance of correction or punishment.

It is all well and nice to claim that he/she will be punished after he/she is dead, but that will not prevent them from causing ever more harm until he/she finally drops dead.

          • Doug Barron

Forgiveness is not as much for the other person, as it is for yourself. Unforgiveness is a spiritual cancer that masticizes in the soul and spirit of the un-forgiver.

          • Virtual Blue

I believe you are thinking of wanting vengeance/revenge there.

I have a few people I’ll never forgive for what they have done, unless they show some honest remorse, and I feel fine with that.

I don’t have to forgive them because they are still remorselessly guilty of what they did I cut them out of my life and added them to the “poisonous to le, will warn people about them when asked” pile and I feel fine about that.

          • Doug Barron

Defending ones self is justified. Self sefense and forgiveness are two different animals.

    • Jack Wellman

Thank you my friend. As for loving God, God loved us first (1st John 4:19) before we ever loved Him. If God had waited for us to recipricate our love, we’d still be enemies of God as we were at one time (Rom 5:10). Jesus said to love our enemies and pray for them…I believe that is what we must do. His commands for us to do so are extensive in the Gospels (i.e. Matt 5).

      • Virtual Blue

God is a supernatural being, being better by definition.
He also created us per the bible.
I think it’s easier to love what you created than to love someone who harmed you.

I’ll just go for not demonizing and dehumanizing my “enemies” and at least make an attempt at guessing their motivations.
And that is about as far as I’m willing to go.

  • I can’t see how we can be enemies of non existent beings. But I do agree with your proposition that we should love those people that are considered to be our enemies. As a humanist, I believe that compassion, healing mercy and loving kindness towards all should be my goal (though I often fail miserably). So we should show compassion towards Muslims, though we should protect citizens from terrorist and other criminal activities, no matter whether they are Muslims or not.

The human Jesus of the text (whether a mythical character or partly historical character) told us to love our enemies and this I agree we should do. Anyway thanks for the article, but all this Satan, demons and some of the other stuff is not necessary. Let’s concentrate on loving our human enemies.
