Focus on the Family’s False Prophets

Two other Patheos bloggers, Libby Anne and Fred Clark, have kindly pointed out that we have just entered the month, October 2012, about which writers from Focus on the Family penned a “letter from the future” almost 4 years ago, detailing the changes that would allegedly result if Barack Obama were to become president.

Fred points out that they get at most half a point if one deals generously with their 34 predictions. He also notes points that were off-target even in their assumptions about the future, in addition to their specific predictions.

Click through to read the whole letter. It will remind you of comparable fear-mongering going on in the same sorts of circles in the lead up to the upcoming election. And it will put that fear-mongering in perspective nicely, showing it up for what it is: not merely ridiculous hogwash, but false prophecy.

The Bible says that false prophets should be stoned to death. I don’t think that such drastic measures are necessary. It would be enough to simply stop giving them money, and credence, and support, and attention. But at the very least, if you listen to these purveyors of falsehood, embrace their teachings and follow their beliefs, know that you can expect to be at most half right about every 34 topics or so that you talk about, if their “letter from the future” is anything to go by.

Paranoia was not limited to 2012.
50′s, Communists under every rock. Must fight evil North Korea. China is evil and godless. China has nukes! Soviet Union has nukes! Build a bomb shelter. Cuba good. Batista good.
60′s, Domino theory, must build nuclear triad for $$$. Communists taking over everywhere. Cuba bad. Castro bad. Cuba has nukes (with Russian triggermen)! Vietnam is just the first domino. Must fight evil North Vietnam. China is evil and Godless. Communists everywhere.

Fast forward to 2012. We lost in Vietnam. Now our trading partner, and tourist location. China builds everything that Walmart sells. China loans us $$$ to support our debt from fighting wars. Now we fight Islam. Islam bad. Pakistan has nukes (no one seems to care). Iran has 1/2 of a nuke (everyone cares). Israel has hundreds of nukes (no one cares). Wily Coyote has a red-line on his bomb. Better nuke Iran, before he nukes you. But Wily Coyote wants the U.S. to do the dirty work.

End-of-world scenarios drive the far right Christian. I wish the writer of Revelation had underlined “soon”. Maybe we’d be like the Swiss now. With all the banks full of money, free health care, and Romney could put his money in our banks.

To be fair to FotF, the introduction to that “letter from the future” explicitly disclaimed that its authors were “predicting” anything. Not that this really rehabilitates the letter; it’s a despicable exercise in fear-mongering.

Agree with Chris. Hard to say FotF are “false prophets” when the letter specifically says that these aren’t predictions. It also stipulates that these are “likely” or “possible” changes given DEM or far-left control of both Congress and Supreme Court. Obviously, they do not currently control either.
