Box office: The Fate of the Furious breaks records overseas and worldwide but slips somewhat in North America

The Fast and the Furious franchise set some new records at the box office this week.

The Fate of the Furious — the eighth installment in the 16-year-old series — grossed an estimated $532.5 million around the world this weekend, thereby breaking the record set two years ago by Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($529 million).

Of the new film’s global haul, $432.3 million came from overseas — far surpassing the foreign record set by Jurassic World ($316.7 million) — and $100.2 million came from North America, which is hardly a record (the film ranks 42nd among domestic openings, well behind Furious 7’s $147.2 million) but is still pretty good.

The only other new film in the top ten this week was Gifted, which stars Chris Evans as a man who gets into a custody battle with his mathematically talented niece’s grandmother. That film, which had a limited release last week, expanded to 1,146 theatres this week and landed in sixth place with $3 million.

Two “faith-based” films did well at the box office this Easter weekend, too.

The Case for Christ, which cracked the top ten when it opened in 1,174 theatres last week, had a slight expansion to 1,386 theatres this week and landed in ninth place with $2.72 million, thereby raising its domestic cume to $8.4 million.

Meanwhile, The Shack landed in 14th place with $700,000 in its seventh week.

The Shack had the fourth-best first and second weeks of any “faith-based” film, and, if the estimates hold, this week it will have the eighth-best seventh weekend:

Beauty and the Beast earned $13.6 million and ranked third in its fifth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $454.6 million. The film has earned another $588.4 million overseas, for a global total of $1.043 billion.

Smurfs: The Lost Village earned $6.5 million and ranked fourth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $24.7 million. The film has earned another $70.3 million overseas, for a global total of $95 million.

Going in Style earned $6.4 million and ranked fifth in its second week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $23.4 million. The film has earned another $11.7 million overseas, for a global total of $35.1 million.

Get Out earned $2.92 million and ranked seventh in its eighth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $167.5 million. The film has earned another $16 million overseas, for a global total of $183.5 million.

Power Rangers earned $2.85 million and ranked eighth in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $80.6 million. The film has earned another $47.7 million overseas, for a global total of $128.3 million.

And Kong: Skull Island earned $2.67 million and ranked tenth in its sixth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $161.2 million. The film has earned another $391.1 million overseas, for a global total of $552.3 million.
