Shawn Stanley is the author of a new book called A Man Whose Name Was Joseph. Recently, I caught up with Shawn to discuss his new book. Enjoy! Instead of asking, “what is your book about,” I’m going to ask the question that’s behind that question. And that unspoken question is, “how are readers going to benefit from reading your book?” Shawn Stanley: That is a very good question. My book benefits the reader by immersing them into the nativity story. Transporting... Read more

Bren Hughes has written an accessible book called Heaven’s Muscle. It’s about unleashing the power of the Spirit in your life (so says the title). I read the book in one sitting. It’s a fast, engaging, easy to digest read. Bren is a good writer, and he draws the reader into his points through the use of personal story. The book is also laced with Scripture, so I like that it’s biblically based. Heaven’s Muscle takes a brutally honest look... Read more

Recently, I caught up with J.W. Phillips, the author of Pursuing Fellowship: By Activating the One Another Principles. Here’s the interview. Pursuing Fellowship, volume one, looks to be a meaty book. Instead of asking, “what is your book about,” I’m going to ask the question that’s behind that question. And that unspoken question is, “how are readers going to benefit from reading your book?” J. W. Phillips: I am concerned, Frank, that whenever God’s people are given a pabulum portion of... Read more

Patheos asked the evangelical bloggers to name our hero for 2014. I’ve selected the renowned New Testament scholar Craig Keener. To my mind, Keener is the world’s foremost expert in first-century history as it relates to the New Testament documents. Keener is the editor of the best-selling IVP Bible Background Commentary of the New Testament and the author of the new formidable, ground-breaking commentary series on Acts entitled Acts: An Exegetical Commentary. Keener is a “hero” in my eyes for... Read more

My favorite New Testament scholar of the 20th century was the British scholar F.F. Bruce. Bruce was a “bright and shining light” in 20th century evangelicalism. He was prolific, churning out high quality work year after year. He had the rare ability to write academic books as well as popular (accessible) books. Bruce’s specialty was Jesus and Paul. F.F. Bruce also understood the importance of chronology in New Testament studies. Consequently, he published a translation of the New Testament that... Read more

For the both of you who got hot under the collar because I interviewed the founder of Leaders Book Summaries last month (you both had an allergic reaction to the word “leaders”), I wish to remind you of three things: 1. I have NEVER been anti-leader or anti-leadership. 2. I have said repeatedly (and ad nausea) that leadership exists. It can be good or bad, helpful or hurtful, but leaders are and leadership is. It’s organic to the DNA of... Read more
