A group of inmates are being hailed as heroes after breaking open the door of their holding cell in a Texas county jail.

In one moment, these inmates were joking with the police officer standing guard over them. In the next, he was slumped over in his chair having a heart attack.

The quick-thinking, but shackled, prisoners began yelling and making noise, yet, no one came. In desperation, they kicked open the cell door and begin banging on the doors, hoping someone would hear. They even tried using his police radio to send a “mayday” message.

Deputies in the courtrooms on the floors above heard the commotion and rushed to the scene thinking a fight had broken out. That’s when they realized what was happening and began life-saving medical care on the officer.

Parker County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ryan Speegle noted how dangerous this situation could have been for the incapacitated deputy, saying, “He had keys. Had a gun. It could have been an extremely bad situation.”

It was also noted in a local news report that the enclosure door has been updated to be more secure.

One of the prisoners who helped said, “It never crossed my mind not to help whether he’s got a gun or a badge. If he falls down, I’m gonna help him.”

That unnamed officer is doing much better and will be returning to work.

What a great story to share in the wake of the Dallas tragedy.
