Predictions

So, what are your predictions for 2008? They can include matters political, social, artistic, religious, or whatever else you want to put forward. This time next year we will return to this post to see who was right, who was wrong, and who all were taken by surprise.

About Gene Veith

I predict that the coming elections will feature front page stories made out of non-issues in an increasingly cruel evaluation of personality that have nothing to do with real issues of government.

    OK, too easy. :^)

I predict that the Democrats will nominate Barack Obama, that the Republicans will nominate Rudy Giuliani, that Obama will win the general election, and that the Republicans will blame Ron Paul and his supporters.

I predict that Christ will come again in glory. In which case dear Doctor V, you will not be returning to this post because you will have far happier things to do!

And if he does not return in 08, I predict that His church will endure.

In that second case, I will support prayerfully whoever gets elected, even Romney (yuck!) , and I predict that I will be very disappointed if the Democrats are stupíd enough to push for Clinton and not Obama as their nominee….

    ok, too easy :)

when I lived in utah, i discovered that many youth converted to mormonism because of donny and marie. I predict, should romney become president, that there would be massive conversions to the mormon church world wide. it would be an impressive propaganda tool and would be used as such by the mormon church, especially outside of the usa.

Imagine what will happen should romney be elected president of the united states. instant respectability for mormonism. Mormonism would then be “okay” socially in a way that it is not now…

but on the other hand….maybe then, finally, mormonism would be presented as it truly is. something that looks like science fiction with god living on a planet named kolob and having eternal sex… etc etc…. this is bizzare but accurately represents what mormons accurately believe. I would ask you if you have ever heard any of this from a mormon? the answer is no. why is that? yet paulw and craig here did not dispute any of what vieth said earlier…

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3518122935543352086

how would the rest of you predict a romney presidency would affect the image of the mormon church?

I maintain this is different than were we to elect a muslim or buddhist or jewish or athiest, or rastafarian president. those sects do not pretend to be something that they are not in a lying and deceptive way. THIS would be the reason I could not possibly vote for Romney. Only if he came clean and said the truth about mormonism….. how could I vote for someone who is TAUGHT to lie by his church?

I predict the whole episcopal meltdown is going to fade when the congregations realize that they must leave behind their buildings and property if they leave the episcopal church.

cynical? well many there denied the divinity of Jesus for many years.. including bishops (spong anyone?)…. and i did not see any mass exodus… so what is this all really about…..hmmmmm

I predict that when people see that the world has not come to an end in Massachusetts and that men and women are still getting married there, and that two homos or lesbians getting married ends up looking quite boring….. that this will no longer be an issue used effectively by republicans to win elections… and i predict that soon the “don´t ask dont tell” policy in the military will be dropped as the military commission formed to evaluate this question suggested.

I predict that art of every kind, fashion, architecture, film, music will continue to simply canibalize the past because the world is moving so fast now…. think there was a “style” for each decade… this weakened in the 80s and stopped. what will take its place will be a globalization of popular art forms. we will start to borrow and adapt elements from other cultures more and more…. it is happening now in Brasil this way.

I predict that latino programming will start to become an important part of american culture now that second generation latinos are demanding english language programming from the spanish speaking stations. I predict further that this will change the political face of the usa. I predict that republicans will continue to dig their own grave with the latino segment of the population and immigrants in general.

i predict that someday soon, people will tire and the government will start to simply prosecute terrorists as the common criminals that they are because they will no long gain political capital to frame things as a “war” on terrorism and keep people in a constant state of military alert and in fear.

common sense here will finally prevail!!

i predict that push to make every financial transaction in the usa a transaction that includes an element of interest will accelerate, and that no one will notice that banks have managed to insert themselves into every facit of life to squeeze some interest out of it that that fewer and fewer things are owed outright by individuals in our society. there is a clear trend here…. it is not a good trend. the end of paper money is close…ron paul is a dinosaur here even if he IS right….

(now for a screed: where ARE the republicans and conservatives on usury laws and state sponsored gambling?? reasonable usury laws would have prevented the morgage meltdown, and bankruptcies would automatically decline because banks would no longer find it profitable to stumble over each other to offer credit to those who are not credit worthy and make the rest of us pay for it with higher interest rates….where are the voices speaking to the morality of all this?)

I predict that in 2008 Frank will finally get his own blog. He will read Veith’s post, pause to consider his comments, make short summaries here and then elaborate in own blog post. Veith’s loyal readers will then happily traipse over to Frank’s blog to read, consider and comments on his thoughts.

    Frank,

    You wrote at #6 -

“I predict the whole episcopal meltdown is going to fade when the congregations realize that they must leave behind their buildings and property if they leave the episcopal church.”

The laws in this regard vary from state to state. In Virginia, the congregations keep the property. So, Falls Church and Truro are safe.
