Liveblogging Debate #2

Here we go again.  For our not-necessarily-alcoholic drinking game, let’s knock one back when we hear the following words (and thanks for your suggestions, from which some of these are drawn):

(1)  Look

(2)  Big Bird

(3)  Arithmetic

(4)  47%

(5)  We can do better

The following words are highly unlikely to be mentioned, so if they come up, fill up your glass:

(1)  Drones

(2)  Syria

All right.  Ready?  Go.

A college student asking if he’ll get a job. Romney bragging about his largesse to students in Massachusetts and promised more government money for Pell grants. Not conservatively-correct. But Romney is talking personally to the young man and gets in his job digs. Obama says, “your future is bright.” How does he know that?

We’ve got some serious doctor shortages and some pretty significant shortages in some of the PhD level jobs. I don’t trust anything either of them are saying now to actually be accomplished even if they had a completely free hand, but expanding the green card system for higher education sorts of positions and the very low pay positions that Americans don’t want would be wins for everyone.

Let’s hope Romney would keep his promises better than Obama did. I’m not holding my breath, though.

For all Romney was pounding on Obama’s failed promises, I can’t think of any presidents who have been good at keeping political promises. Romney is making lots of promises. The probability of him keeping all those in miniscule.

A second amendment question! This one is asking Obama, what are you doing to limit the accessibility of assault weapons? He says, weapons designed for soldiers are not meant for individuals on the streets. (I thought the second amendment, according to Democrats, is about militias. Which would involve military weapons kept by ordinary citizens.)

Obama lost this debate because of Libya. He misled by implying that he said on 9/12 that Benghazi was an act of terror. Romney was incredulous — Crowley bailed Obama out by seemingly confirming Obama’s version. Romney missed an obvious opening — if you thought it was terror on 9/12, then why the heck did you go to Las Vegas, and why the heck did you send Susan Rice out to the Sunday shows the next weekend to say it was the video?

But, despite Romney’s missed opportunity, here’s the thing. Crowley was wrong to intervene, and she was wrong on the facts. Obama did not say that Benghazi was an act of terror on 9/12 — he dissembled. Moreover, the clincher is that we are now going to talk about Benghazi for the next week, leading up to the third debate next Monday, which is about foreign policy.

And that is the last thing Obama wanted or needed, as he tries to pull even in a campaign where he is presently at least slightly behind.

sisi @ 189: Sorry, you are wrong, and Candy Crowley admitted it on CNN after the debate. I watched the tape — you should as well. You will see that he said “No acts of terror” in the context of 9/11/2001, and not in the context, at all, of saying that the Benghazi attack was an act of terror by a terrorist organization.

Moreover, if Obama’s comment had been right, it probably would be worse for him, as he would have no excuse whatsoever for going to Las Vegas.

Bottom line — Because of Obama’s prevarication, and Crowley’s unfortunate, and uninformed, intervention in the debate on behalf of Obama, Libya will overshadow the other debate issues, and be the topic of conversation this week. Obama can ill afford that outcome since he is running behind.

In 46 BC the Romans elected Caesar as dictator of Rome.

One has to understand from history, Rome was godless. They had a dictator, what do we have now? OR, what will we have if we exchange one dictator for one who believes he is going to be a god.

How can one vote? What will you gain?

I will vote GOP because we need a change in the administration and if Rommey is the lesser of two evils, I’ll have to go for it. I personally don’t think his religion will affect the way he will govern. Changing the subject….I saw a bit of Piers Morgan last night or the night before. Had Franklin Graham on. Piers asked him if he thought Romney is a christian. Franklin waffled, something I’ve rarely heard of him doing. But….I can understand…if he said “no” the press et al, would be all over it. And of course he and his dad, Billy, are supporting Romney. I am very sure Franklin does not think Romney is a christian by our definition but he did what he felt he had to do in the interview. If Osteen had been asked you know how that would have gone.

Just reading Dust’s comment @196. First paragraph he writes…that is also my opinion. Good perspective, Dust.

Dust @196 “Grace….am not as sure as you what you think are the beliefs of Mormons, but am quite sure that even if they believe they will be gods, the operative words are WILL BE and am pretty sure they don’t think they are gods while on this planet.”

They don’t believe they are gods while alive, they believe they will be gods after they die.

YOU WRITE: “why don’t you just give up your Mormon bashing, it’s not relevant to how he will govern, as he’s shown in Mass…and it is something that could easily be turned around on a main stream christian, in that the things you believe in are pretty wild too, by the secular worlds standing.”

The truth, based on what they believe is not “bashing” as you call it.

How a man believes, his foundation is his core, which makes it “relevant to how he will govern” -

My beliefs and those of other Christian believers are not “pretty wild” as you state. The world by and large has never accepted Christ, you should know that.

⚫ Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Matthew 7:14 -

    Herein lies the problem:

“The Lord created you and me for the purpose of becoming Gods like Himself; when we have been proved in our present capacity, and been faithful with all things He puts into our possession. We are created, we are born for the express purpose of growing up from the low estate of manhood, to become Gods like unto our Father in heaven.

As a citizen of the United States, it is my business. Those who run for president are going to be examined in many different ways, by myself and everyone else – that includes you, who believes this is none of my business, which is foolish on your part!

Grace…..so who are the christian presidents of whom you would approve? my guess is most would not be able to meet your standards of christian purity…

as for my comment of mainstream Christianity considered foolishness by the rest of the world, see st. paul for more info!

just hope the day doesn’t come when your faith is treated with the same kind of disrespect and intolerance you show the Mormons, in my humble opinion…it’s somewhat distasteful, perhaps disgraceful, if you get my drift, for any american who appreciates our constitution to bash other religions that mean them no harm in this life…that’s my point of their belief in being gods someday, it has little to do with how they conduct themselves in this world, again…actually in many respects Mormons far outshine many others in their patriotism and civic mindedness, in my sincere and humble opinion :)

    cheers!

Christians have been persecuted since Christ walked upon this earth.

I respect everyone’s right to worship as they please, but that does not include their beliefs. I don’t respect, disrespect of the Bible, God, Christ. Cults don’t believe the Bible.

Those who believe they will be gods one day, have a core belief that is contrary to Scripture, to God ALMIGHTY. It permeates their life.

Your last sentence mirrors your beliefs, and how little you understand – Patriotism and civic mindedness” is a trump on God as the only God?

Grace….so how many truly christian presidents have we had in this heathen land, given your ambiguous, but strict requirements on faith and beliefs?

my guess is not many could have met your standards, but they respected our constitution and our country has done ok in spite of the many so-called pagans and unholy sinners running the show, well with the exception of Jimmy Carter :)

I cannot find one President of the United States, who ever thought they would be a god.

The standards you tout, as an argument, are moot. Cults are full of such arguments, they live for those who will argue on their behalf.

There are no “cheers” it’s a sad commendation, on those who are Believers, not knowing or caring what the cults believe. Then when they are about to step into the highest leadership of the western world, they mock!

    Grace at 202, you said….

“Those who believe they will be gods one day, have a core belief that is contrary to Scripture, to God ALMIGHTY. It permeates their life.”

Some people could say the same about folks who don’t believe in the means of grace which they feel is contrary to scripture….you know, baptism, the lord’s supper, absolution? or any other thing citizens hold dear…and is protected by the constitution!

and yet that does not stop them from being civil to their neighbors, or passing laws to bar those heathens from holding public office, etc.

on the other hand, others might not be so tolerant….given everything you have said, of course, that certainly would not include you :)

Dust, really good point! We might even be considered “idolators” along with the Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox because we could be accused of “worshipping(?)” the bread and wine and the water because they actually DO something–give forgiveness of sins. They’re not just simple elements when combined with God’s Word. Jesus is IN communion. (Even though He said so — still considered a radical thought by some.)

Now we can add Lutherans to the list of people that should not be voted into office. Uh, oh — Paul Ryan is Catholic!

Grace…am not sure how you answered the question, it was how will their belief, etc. affect the way they govern, etc. seems like you answered as if the question was, do you believe, etc.

My bogus argument is that we are governed by imperfect people no matter what faith they have, but some character issues or faith issues may affect the way they govern, and some won’t….so can you draw a connection between this particular belief about the after life and explain how that makes him a bad leader in the hear and now?

Also my concocted argument has been the same throughout my comments….you just choose to not answer the questions, but instead ask others, answer your own, and make various insults and insinuations, without backing up anything and it kind of makes me want to have a drink, but it’s too early :)

Romney is not going to make any moves that will turn Roe vs. Wade around. This country has been in this condition for years now. It’s one thing to be pro-life, which I am, it’s another to believe Americans by and large are going to repent as a nation, turn to God, and allow the unborn to be born alive and cared for.

Some of you might not be aware, but Laura Bush and Barbara Bush are both pro-choice, add Condoleezza Rice as well.

“During the 2000 presidential campaign, Barbara Bush said the Republican Party should drop an anti-abortion plank from its national platform.

“Listen to your mama,” declared a radio ad aired at the time by an abortion-rights group. “That’s a family value we can all agree on.”Now, as President Bush readies to announce his choice for a Supreme Court justice, that ad remains one of the only direct references to a rarely-mentioned fact: The women closest to the president support abortion rights. His mother, his wife and one of his most trusted advisors, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, all have stated that they believe Roe v. Wade should not be overturned.

It would be an excellent idea if wives of those who are running for president and VP, were interviewed. The interviewer being allowed to ask any questions they like, without the wife knowing before hand what was going to be asked. In this way, we the people of the United States would get a much better glimpse into the other half of the front runners lives.

Men have always been chosen as the President, however their wives play a starring role as First Lady, but their core beliefs are never interviewed and considered. I imagine it’s consider ‘bad form to question the lady as to her moral belieifs, however that’s an obtuse reason.

You can see a great deal, by a mans wife, what she believes, and how she presents herself, when asked questions she has not been given beforehand to ponder.

Just takin’ a look around here and see the Laura Bush thing on gay marriage. I didn’t read any of the links provided, but I’m sure I saw her interviewed by Larry King a couple or years or so ago and she stated her view on gay marriage. I wasn’t too surprised. I think I knew about Condy Rice.

Oh well. The election will come and go. You guys ought to stop pickin’ on Grace. Yes, I know, you think are being baited. Anyway my great confession is I’m enjoyed the interchange. Peace to one and all.

It would be an excellent idea if wives of those who are running for president and VP, were interviewed. The interviewer being allowed to ask any questions they like, without the wife knowing before hand what was going to be asked. In this way, we the people of the United States would get a much better glimpse into the other half of the front runners lives.

How insane. It is like calling a wife to the witness stand to testify against her own husband, which is specifically not allowed. It is just evil to pit husband and wife against each other, which is exactly what reporters would do and what is being suggested here. Ugh, is there nothing sacred, not even the marriage vow? Just disgusting.

If women such as Ann Romney can give a speech at the Republican Convention, in support of her husband for president, she is more than capable of being interviewed.

There is nothing “sacred” about giving a speech, anymore than it’s sacred territory to be interviewed when you might become First Lady. When a spouse puts herself out there, to speak publicly as she wishes, should be able to handle an interview.

I find this just barbarous to wish to throw the wives to the wolves. Just creepy. A woman is not obligated to answer to her husband’s employer.

In this way, we the people of the United States would get a much better glimpse into the other half of the front runners lives.

We are not entitled to a glimpse into the private lives of a public servant and his wife. That is wholly improper. I don’t want to know about their private lives. Whatever happened to dignity and privacy?

This statement in particular is absolutely galling. It is like just salivating at the opportunity to humiliate someone for the pure sport of it. I will assume it was not so intended, but a plain reading of it is just stunningly offensive. “any question they like?” Um, no.

I am with Wendy Shalit on this one.
