Blog developments update

We now have e-mail subscriptions to both posts and follow-up comments!   That’s one of your requests that we were able to make happen.  We’re still trying to figure out comment numbering.  But we’re making progress.

I’ve also got the hang of the new format, with the first part of the post appearing on the home page and then your having to click “read more” to read the rest of it.  What we worked out is that instead of just having six lines of  text in a box of six lines before an automatic jump,  I can now be flexible in how  much of the post  shows up on the home page, inserting  my own jumps.   I’m still breaking most of my posts into two parts, in accord with the Patheos template, but the beauty of the format is that I can put more material into my  posts, adding pictures and other discussion with great abandon, without having a post take over the entire page.  So it’s a change, but I think a good change.

Also, Patheos got rid of that “esoteric” ad that kept popping up to the annoyance of us all.

There looks to be some more tweaks that will be possible, including putting some of the old icons back into  the sidebar.

I appreciate too that the regular readers seem to have come on over to the new site, and we’re getting new viewers! So thanks for that.

The email “follow up” is great, THANKS.

As for the numbered posts – I was looking at a site on Patheos about a week ago, – I’m sure the posts were numbered. I should have noted which one it was.

  • Gene Veith

Thanks, Grace. If anyone comes across a Patheos site with numbered comments, please tell me here which site it is. The Patheos tech people are asking me the same thing. It may seem strange that they aren’t able to keep up with the technical side of all of their blogs, but that’s the way it is. Those blogs may have installed a plug-in that makes that possible, one which actually does work without throwing the whole system off.

The RSS feed shows only the portion of the posts that’s on the home page, I think. I much prefer the older way, when the whole post was in the feed. This slows me down. But maybe Patheos needs the clicks.

Jesus Creed (Evangelical Channel) has numbered comments.

From using the “Notify me of follow-up comments by email” feature, it’s apparent that the blog is using WordPress for it’s back-end heavy lifting. That might be a clue as to what can be configured.

I’ve had you in my Google Reader for quite some time, and most of the time I catch up on this on my Kindle Fire. Having to click “read more” is a major slowdown on this device, and actually leads to me reading less. Just one person’s feedback; I do enjoy reading your posts, however long, but this is a major speedbump for me in doing so.

Man, Veith has a lot of fair-weather followers. “I really like what you have to say, but I can’t be bothered to click an extra link.” I dare say the digital age is making us a wee bit whiny.

The mouseover pop up for share this is rather annoying. Drives me nuts when I am not paying attention to my mouse while scrolling.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Is there a way to search Cranach (and only cranach) for older posts? I tried entering some key words into the search box on the home page, but I think I got hits from all over Patheos.

  • tODD

Kerner (@7:36 pm), try modifying this Google search to fit your needs. Obviously, you can modify the first bit to suit your needs. Works well on older posts, not as well on very recent posts.

Download the free version of Ghostery.

  • Gene Veith

Yes, Kerner (@7:36 p.m.). Just scroll down a little further on the sidebar and you will find “search this blog.” That is what searches Cranach. The search window at the very top searches all Patheos blogs. But there actually is a search function for this blog alone. You just have to look for it a little.

  • EricM

Dr. Veith – the pop up ads (showing up in a separate window) still happens on my system. I don’t think you actually got rid of them.

  • Gene Veith

I didn’t get rid of pop up ads. Just use your pop up blocker on your browser if they bother you. What I got rid of was an ad for a New Agey kind of product or service (I don’t even remember what it was).

  • Gene Veith

We now have numbered comments and no nesting!
