The Academy Awards

In light of the above post, we should take the opportunity to discuss the Academy Awards that will be given out Sunday night.  As someone who goes to the movies far more than the 3 times per year that is considered a large number, I actually think that this year has a stronger field than usual.  Who do you think will win, and (what is not at all the same question) who do you think should win?  (I list the major nominations after the break.)

Best Picture:Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty
Best Actor in a Leading Role:Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phoenix, Denzel Washington
Best Actress in a Leading Role:Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Emmanuelle Riva, Quvenzhané Wallis, Naomi Watts
Best Director:Amour (Michael Haneke), Beasts of the Southern Wild (Benh Zeitlin), Life of Pi (Ang Lee), Silver Linings Playbook (David O. Russell), Lincoln (Steven Spielberg)

I would pick the following for both “will win” and “should win”

Best Picture: Argo (perhaps out of a sense of guilt over not nominating Affleck in the directors cat.)
Best Actor in a Leading Role: (no contest) Day-Lewis
Best Actress in a Leading Role: Jennifer Lawrence
    Best Director: David O. Russell

Lincoln should have been more accurately titled ‘The 13th Amendment’
Argo won’t win–too close a reference to Benghazi.
    Django will probably win.
    I vote for Les Miz.

Life of Pis should win something. Not because I liked it, but because Yan Martel is from Saskatoon. And occasionally goes to the Bistro my wife works at.

OOPS!! Life of Pi. Not what I wrote…….

  • LAJ

    Les Miz and Hugh Jackman!

I hope Amour wins best Picture or best Foreign film , which it probably will (foreign). I am a big fan of Michael Haneke, allthough not all his films to everyones taste.

  • Ellen

    Argo
    Daniel Day-Lewis
    Jessica Chastain
    Benh Zeitlin

Several contenders are ones I haven’t seen, so this isn’t a fair comparison, but I really want to see Les Mis clean up everywhere it can. Can’t say enough good things about the film. Just love it beyond words.

Loved watching Michelle Obama from the White House and Jack Nicholson announce the winning picture.
