New comment system updates

New comment system updates November 24, 2015

Jack Donaldson reports on changes to the World Table comment system, thanks to your input.  Some of them (e.g., bigger and more legible font; ability to get e-mail notifications) have been implemented.  He also gives the status of other, more important changes that they are working on.  Read what he says after the jump.

From Jack Donaldson of World Table:
Since launching, we’ve found and fixed bugs, and added several great features. For example, today we released a new version of the product that allows users to customize their profile in important ways – see below. We also increased the font size and darkened some fonts throughout to make them easier to read. Your suggestions and your communities reactions are helping us prioritize our development as well as helping us work towards a product that helps you, as bloggers get the most out of your commenting communities. We are also working on other improvements to the system based on feedback we’ve received. For example:

Known issues:
Note: We can’t give specific timelines for most of the below items, but, we are aware of the issues and will work to solve them as soon as possible. This list includes most of the items we are working on currently. Many others are planned, but
Notification permalinks are not linking to hidden comments. When a notification email is sent, if the reply or rating happens to be hidden in the thread the link doesn’t work. This is a very important usability issue that we have given high priority to fix.
Early sign-ups via Disqus are not getting email notifications. Disqus was not passing email address to us. This issue has now been resolved, and with the latest release, users can add an email address to their profile in order to receive notifications (about replies or ratings to their comments).
Comments are not showing up in real-time. In order to see new comments, users must currently refresh the page. This is another usability issue we are working on with high priority.
Users cannot edit their comments. We will fix this by allowing edits until the comment has been rated or someone has replied. We will also add the ability to reply (not rate) one’s own comments.
Threading issues. We will work on a release that limits threading to 3 levels, then comments will be flat and chronological. This is a fairly involved issue. Meanwhile, we are working on a styling change that will fix the issue that makes rating difficult when deep in the thread.
At times the system can seem slow to load. When many comments are visible (>100) the system does slow down, this is true of all comment systems and we are constantly looking for ways to improve performance. At Patheos, some have observed that it seems slower than Disqus. The biggest reason for this is that the WT is the last thing to load on the page. It is more an issue of optimizing the sequence of loading, than actual load time of the comment box. This should improve in time as Patheos puts more emphasis on it.
