What does it mean to be “blessed”?

“This is a real blessing.”  “I have been so blessed.”  “Count your blessings.”  “God bless you!”  “The Lord bless you and keep you. . .”  The word blessing expresses an important concept in Christian spirituality.  But what, exactly, does it mean?

My daughter, Mary Moerbe, has written a book on the subject, entitled Blessed:  God’s Gift of Love, drawing on the doctoral research of CPH editor Christopher Mitchell.

Read it.  You will find it a real blessing.  (sorry)

In the meantime, before you read the book and get all the answers, how would you describe what it means to be “blessed”?  The Bible talks about God blessing us, but it also says that we should “bless the Lord.”  How do we do that?  What does it mean when a pastor blesses us?

Editorial Description, Blessed: Christopher Mitchell, Mary J. Moerbe, Amazon.com: Books:

“Bless you!” We say it because someone has suffered loss or has made a positive difference in someone’s life. We say it because someone sneezed. But what does “bless you” even mean?

“Blessing” is a weightier word than many people think it is. It is a concept given to us by God, and the meaning of it is revealed in His Word. Rev. Dr. Chris Mitchell and Deaconess Mary Moerbe dig into the meaning of the Hebrew term for “blessing,” brk, which is used in nearly 500 places throughout Scripture.

Drawing from the teachings of our Lord, Mitchell and Moerbe present the nature of God s blessing of His creation and the steadfast love He has for us.

An insightful resource for serious lay readers, students, and pastors, this book helps us better understand how we-who have received God’s blessing through His Son-can become blessings to others and can bless God in return!
