As Candidates Criss-Cross the Country

And political anxiety is heightened … from advice from St. Francis de Sales, via Mary DeTurris Poust:

Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset

My absolute FAVORITE saint. I have had an anxiety disorder all my life. I’m 67. I came back to the Church after many, many years away, in July of 2008. One of the first things that came before me was his Be At Peace prayer. I said it constantly, also adding in the LOH and various other practices daily. Gradually the anxiety has mainly disappeared, coming back when I neglect my daily prayers, relying on myself and not God. The turning point was one day sitting in church alone with pervasive anxiety, thinking this is never going to end, praying the rosary and not being able to concentrate. Finally I pulled out St. Francis’s prayer again and the words “He will either shield you from suffering or give you UNFAILING STRENGTH TO BEAR IT” sank in and I asked God for simply the strength to bear it, that’s all, and such peace came that I cannot describe. Total.

“Be at Peace,” by Saint Francis de Sales

Do not look forward in fear to the changes in life; rather, look to them with full hope that as they arise, God, Whose very own you are, will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand it, God will carry you in His Arms.

Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same understanding Father Who cares for you today will take care of you then and every day.

He will either shield you from suffering or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.

I appreciate everything that you write. Thank you.
