Prayer Request March 23, 2009

A reader writes:

Last Wednesday, a friend of mine named Duane Converse died in Iraq. He was a civilian, working as a carpenter for KBR. Cause of death was accidental. He leaves behind two sons and an ex-wife who is taking care of his funeral arrangements because the boys are his only real next of kin. Justin is 7 and Chris is 5.

He supported her during her deployments while they were married (he supported her through college and OCS); he played the role of house-husband when it seemed the best option for the kids. He loved the boys. He was a great Dad. She would come home exhausted from work, and crash on the couch. He would pick up the kids from school/day care; clean house, and cook. He worked harder than almost anybody I’ve ever seen. He was a good carpenter; and a terrific cook. His in- laws loved him. His (and her) hospitality to friends was amazing. He had some rough edges; but he was a good man, and a kind one.

I’d be grateful for prayers for the repose of Duane’s soul, and for comfort and consolation for Justin and Chris, and their Mom (she divorced him, but she’s still rocked by this, and doing her best to help her sons deal with the loss of their father), and others who love them.

Father, grant eternal light and rest to Duane and consolation by your Holy Spirit to Justin and Chris, who have suffered so much trauma. Grant your peace, mercy and strength to their mother as well and give her the grace to be their strength in this terrible time. Remember Duane with favor on That Day and welcome him into your kingdom through Christ our Lord, Amen. Mother Mary and St. Joseph, pray for Duane and for all those who love him.
