A modest director with a modest history of films for which there is much to be modest about does his bit to feed the sinister Vatican conspiracy meme so beloved by consumers of his dumb films. Hopefully, without the sex and blasphemy themes keeping it on artificial life support, the latest effort at bringing the depe thots of Dan Brown to the screen will tank. It’s hard to believe people will sit still for two hours of “true Catholics hate and fear science” lectures, combined with a few corpses, that awful Langdon haircut, and the normal dumb puzzles. But a film public that could make millionaires of the makers of Smokey and the Bandit is fickle enough to do anything, I suppose.
