Can Anything Good Come from HuffPo?

Apparently, yes. They actually have a pretty decent piece on 25 Spiritual Classics Every Christian Should Read. Of course, the comboxes are overrun with the usual brainless bigotry (the only person more brainlessly bigoted than a Christian fundamentalist is an anti-Christian fundamentalist), but the book recommendations are still pretty good.

Hmmm. You may want to change it to ‘than an anti-Catholic fundamentalist is an anti-Christian fundamentalist’ or something. Not all Christian fundamentalists are bigots.

  • Glenn

What?!?! No “Making Senses Out of Scripture” or “By What Authority?” The list just lost all credibility with me. Sheesh!

Nice to see so many Catholic titles, especially from the great saints and the early Church period.

  • Amazed that nothing by Martin Luther made the list. “Bondage of the Will” and his Commentary on Galatians are two of my favorite books.

  • Hezekiah Garrett

    Reread Mark’s post, Dave.

Unless he has edited it, he doesn’t remotely say all Christian fundamentalists are braindead bigots.

    • Dave G.

      What does he say?

  • Glad I am to see that Orthodoxy made the list.

  • “Of course, the comboxes are overrun with the usual brainless bigotry (the only person more brainlessly bigoted than a Christian fundamentalist is an anti-Christian fundamentalist)”

Webster’s defines a “bigot” is a narrow-minded, intolerant person – perhaps one who labels Christian fundamentalists as “brainless bigots.”

    For shame, Mark Shea! 🙂

  • Mark S (not for Shea)

    That’s a remarkably good list.

The only ones I disagree with a bit are Calvin (who was a heretic) and Bunyan (who was a bore). But all in all, good job, HuffPo.

  • Hezekiah Garrett

I read him discussing the relative abilities of the two groups viz a viz braindead bigotry. He seems to indicate this is an area where the fundamentalist atheist’s abilities exceed the fundamentalist Christian’s.

Not identifying either group AS braindead bigots.

    • Dave G.

Nope don’t see it. Let’s try it this way:

“the only person more brainlessly bigoted than a Catholic is an anti-Christian fundamentalist”

That means what? Something that most Catholics in the Catholic blogosphere would have no problem with? I doubt it, since such sweeping statements are often the subject of posts denouncing such sweeping statements as the stuff of anti-Catholic bigotry. So, again, wording it differently so that anyone would see it’s not saying a ‘Christian fundamentalist’ is or isn’t anything any more than a ‘Catholic’ is or isn’t automatically anything might be in order.

  • Hezekiah Garrett

I don’t know what to tell you. But it sounds to me like you, and more than a few other Catholics you assert, have an insufficiently deep dermal layer.

Wake me when you grow tired of taking offense, especially from a former evangelical like our host.

    • Dave G.

Well I guess if you’re OK with such things, that’s fine. Just make sure it’s always fine, as in:

“the only person more brainlessly bigoted than a [fill in blank with Hezekiah Garrett’s favorite group] is an anti-Christian fundamentalist”

  • Hezekiah Garrett

I doubt its a group. If we could examine my soul closely, I imagine my favorite group would be one person, me. (I hate the guy too though, so what can I say, I am complicated.)

So anyway, the only person more brainlessly bigoted than an anti-christian fundamentalist is Hezekiah Garrett. (I switched ’em so I could enjoy the greater portion of ridicule in the statement, rather than the less.)

Still doesn’t hurt. Don’t know what to tell you.

    • Dave G.

If you want to apply it to yourself, have at it. But since this is after the whole 20th century thing, I thought we had moved beyond the formula of Take Group A, applied generic negative Trait, repeat. Mark was wrong as he said it. Not all Christian fundamentalists are bigots or braindead. Anymore than all Catholic fundamentalists are the same.

  • Hezekiah Garrett

    Oki -doki!

    Was that even english?
