Manufacturing Consent

As you know, I think it is insane to support Gingrich, so I certainly don’t disagree with Drudge’s obvious bias against him. But it is nonethless fascinating to watch Drudge pull out the stops to manufacture consent among his readers. The headlines this morning are like a barrage:

NEWT FLASHBACK 1983: REAGAN RESPONSIBLE FOR NATIONAL ‘DECAY’…
NEWT 1986: ‘The Reagan administration has failed, is failing…
NEWT 1988: ‘If Bush runs as continuation of Reaganism he will lose’…
INSIDER: GINGRICH REPEATEDLY INSULTED REAGAN
GINGRICH OPENS DOOR FOR ILLEGALS…
R. EMMETT TYRRELL: William Jefferson Gingrich…
COULTER: RE-ELECT OBAMA: VOTE NEWT!…
DeLay: ‘He’s not really a conservative’…
FL Poll: Romney Stronger than Gingrich in General Election vs. Obama…
CNN: Gingrich admits his ABC claim was false during debate…
Gingrich tells UNIVISION: No perjury during my divorce depositions…
Marianne Gingrich lawyer: ‘He was never deposed’…
FLASHBACK 1998: Gingrich Orchestrated GOP Ads Recalling Clinton-Lewinsky Affair…

He’s not like a real journalist or anything, Just an aggregator and he can promote whatever agenda he likes. But it is fascinating to me how transparently he does promote it and how obviously panicked he is about the possibility of the GOP foolishly nominating Gingrich.

He’s not like a real journalist or anything, Just an aggregator and he can promote whatever agenda he likes.

So he’s just like every other “real journalist” then?

But it is fascinating to me how transparently he does promote it

    Oh, so that’s the difference.

Hmmm…..GOP elites *and* the Dems hate Newt……

    Is there a message here?

    • Mark Shea

Depends on what you mean by hate. The Dems hate the thought of him as President (as any normal person should). They *love* the thought of him as nominee because Obama will destroy him. Nominating Newt will be the final act of suicide by a degenerate party in the throes of self-immolation.

      • Confederate Papist

        I’m not disagreeing with that.

I believe the end (of the Empire) is very close, if not here already and it doesn’t matter who wins this election. Either way we get Sidious.

        • Jared

And the bipartisan Jar-Jar Binks Congress just gave him all the power in the world.

          • Spastic Hedgehog

            HAHAHAHAHAHA

This exchange made my morning. Time to get in my X wing for a meeting downtown.

If Obama had any brains, he’d be making large personal donations to Newt’s campaign. He could write in the memo line “Pennies from Heaven!”

  • Sean O

Gingrich is just a bit more arrogant & prickly than some of the other elites. He would not be substantially different than Romney or Santorum in how he would govern or where his priorities would be. He is a bit more erratic and likely to toss a verbal grenade and has more baggage. Thus the Dems see him as easier to run against & beat. Bad choices all around.

  • Dan C

Gingrich won’t be substantially different than Obama. Obama is not substantially different than Bush who was not substantially different than Clinton.

Its only the rhetoric by one’s opponents that changes.

    • Mark Shea

Yes and no. Sin, like grace, builds on nature. There has been a progressive degradation of our political culture from Clinton to Bush to Obama. Newt will substantially carry that process forward. Of course, so will Obama. But things will not remain in stasis.

  • Thomas R

“As you know, I think it is insane to support Gingrich”

So from here on people can say your support of Paul is insane without you getting sarcastic. Good to know.

    • Mark Shea

Given that I’ve already acknowledge Paul’s kook factor, i don’t think there’s a lot to add. Newt supporters tend to speak of him as a genius. They are… inaccurate.

      • kenneth

If Newt is really what passes for genius in our society, then we ought to surrender en masse to Al Qaeda, asking only that they put us down cleanly with one shot and a video message to the world asking them to remember us as we once were…..

      • Thomas R

I don’t even know if I’m a Newt supporter. Of the Republicans left him and Santorum are the most acceptable to me, but Santorum seems even less likely to get it.

I do think he is very smart, maybe a genius after a fashion. Unfortunately I think that’s not necessarily a good thing. His mind is putting out a bunch of ideas half of which are goofball. And unfortunately he is lacking in the conservative virtue of prudence or restraint so his mouth will just express whatever hypothesis pops into his head. Plenty of “geniuses” would be really erratic and poor as Presidents. Like if Leonardo Da Vinci were leader he’d likely forget meetings to paint or something. Well something like that.

Still I do think that Gingrich has good qualities and that I don’t know his soul or psychology with any certainty.
