I give you the Martin Luther Insult Generator. Marty knew how to let fly, as did any 16th Century polemicist worth his salt, Protestant or Catholic. Now that the personality and issues have cooled into indifference (“Who’s Latomus?” “What are the 95 theses?”) we can sit back an enjoy the sheer artistry of Luther’s invective. It’s easy when you don’t care anything about what the invective is over. Not so easy when the issues are personal to you. When that’s the case, people have shot each other over the question of whether a postage stamp was minted in 1942 or 1943.
