Mike Flynn Fisks a Darwinist Mob

Huh-freaking-larious.   A mob of censorious Stalinist Darwinists goes after a fellow atheist for failing to be as absolutely pure as they are.  Adventures ensue.  Scratch a militant atheist, find a fundamentalist.

Remember: Christians are afraid of reason.  The Apostles of militant atheism are all about the open-minded and fearless pursuit of TRVTH wherever it leads.

  • A Philosopher

The problem with Tom’s book is that the arguments are sloppy and vague, and the targets are mostly straw men. Many philosophers have pointed this out in various reviews – it does get a bit tiring to then consistently find ourselves portrayed among that small portion of the non-philosophical world that pays any attention to our little academic playground as a bunch of hegemons determined to silence the brave rebel saying that the emperor has no clothes.

    • Mark Shea

Perhaps that image could be changed if there weren’t so many hegemonic voices demanding he be silenced and censored. Just a thought.

      • A Philosopher

A more convincing point were there, in fact, any hegemonic voices so demanding. I’m unaware of a single philosopher making anything like such a demand. It’s just been pointed out, over and over again, that the arguments are bad.

        • The Deuce

I’m convinced. I believe you over my lying eyes now. All those responses catalogued by Mike Flynn, and the others I have seen, don’t exist and I never saw them.

          • The Deuce

Also, don’t anyone read this link, because it’s a figment of my imagination: http://edwardfeser.blogspot.com/2013/03/evolutionblog-needs-better-nagel-critics.html

          • A Philosopher

Mike Flynn catalogues a total of zero responses by philosophers, and one response by someone suggesting “silencing or coercing” (on a rather expansive read of that phrase), for a total intersection of: zero philosophers demanding silencing or coercing. Ed Feser cites a grand total of zero in both categories, again for an intersection of zero.

Shakespeare’s sonnets are about iambic pentameter. Any arrangement of words in iambic pentameter will produce the sonnets of Shakespeare.

    See how simple it is?

  • The Deuce

I found Stephen Pinker’s response especially precious. It essentially amounts to: “I’m not saying that Nagel should shut up and stop pursuing the truth out loud simply because it could hurt us left-wing materialists in the culture war by causing people to doubt us. This isn’t about culture war. I’m just saying that OMG THE WORLD IS GOING TO END IF WE LOSE THE CULTURE WAR AND NAGEL IS CAUSING PEOPLE TO DOUBT US SO HE NEEDS TO STFU!”
