Speaking of which… April 6, 2009

here is a typical voice from post-Christian Protestantism. He doesn’t remember when he lost his faith (it evaporated like mist rising off a river, but his progenitors were Baptist). However, he has a cloudy regard for Jesus. His recommendation: forget about all that stuff about the death and resurrection of Jesus. The *real* core of the Christian faith is “Niceness is nice. Be tolerant. Recycle. Support your library and NPR. Moderate, Newsweek-reader literacy is important. Fundamentalists who believe that Jesus is, you know, God and risen from the dead are an embarrassment and possibly a danger to the Republic. The true kingdom of heaven is right here on earth. It’s America. Post-Bush Obama America. Jesus was a radical who agreed with me about all this. That’s why Christians are so offended at my daring boldness.”

I look forward to the day when Newsweek or WaPo print one single column in which, say, Ramadan or Eid are treated with 1/10 the casual contempt and moronic ignorance one routinely finds in the American press every Easter or Christmas.
