Sutra means thread


I’m pleased to let those who don’t know that on this day in 1846 Elias Howe was granted a patent for his sewing machine. It wasn’t the first sewing machine, not even the first to receive a patent. What it was, was the first sewing machine worth manufacturing in large quantities, incorporating a lock stitch in its design.

Puts me to mind of the fact that sutra, the term for a sacred text in Buddhism derives from the same root as thread…

What is important for me in this is how a thread by itself isn’t so much.

What we do with it is what counts, above all, that doing needs to bring things together, to be of genuine use…

But we do that
