The great Hasidic Jewish scholar Abraham Heschel said that the reason idolatry is addressed in the first commandment is that it is our primary problem, and that all the other commandments hinge on this one. It is inevitable that we all have an image of God in our minds that is not God. That isn’t God. As Krishnamurti said, “The word is not the thing.” Notice how he gets his instructions from the book. But once he has the image in his mind, he doesn’t need the book anymore.
