I’ve mentioned before that I think it would be fun to make a Christian version of the Toto song “Rosanna.” But I’ve allowed another Easter season to go by without making one. Maybe the reason is that it is so easy to do a really cheesy and theologically objectionable version by making as few changes to the original lyrics as possible – something like this:
HOSANNA
All I wanna do when I wake up Easter morning is see you rise
Hosanna, Hosanna
I never thought that a God like you could ever care for me, Hosanna
All I wanna do in the middle of the evening is sing your praise
Hosanna, Hosanna
Didn’t know you were asking for all that I could ever give
Chorus:
Two thousand years since you went away, Hosanna yeah
Still you’re gone and I have to say
Meet you all the way, meet you all the way, Hosanna yeah
Meet you all the way, meet you all the way, Hosanna yeah
I can see your face still shining through the heavens on the other side
Hosanna, Hosanna
I didn’t know that a God like you could make me feel so glad, Hosanna
Being a believer means you’ll never ever have to compromise
Hosanna, Hosanna
If I ever lose my faith, well it would hurt so bad
Chorus
(Instrumental break)
Chorus
Meet you all the way, meet you all the way, Hosanna yeah
Meet you all the way, meet you all the way, Hosanna yeah
That’s my idea of what a cheesy version would be like. YouTube has some which are not quite as bad, but still not what I have in mind. Any suggestions on what a good version would do differently? I have some ideas – including for a version that basically tells the Palm Sunday and passion week story – but I will save that for another time and see what ideas readers of this blog have first.
