Sunday night I will board my flight here in Washington D.C. and head down to Nashville, Tennessee to attend the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberties Commissions National Conference. This years theme is The Gospel, Homosexuality, and the Future of Marriage, which I know will make many of my progressive readers cringe. A Southern Baptist conference on Homosexuality? Why would someone who has recently become a public spokesperson for a national organization working for Marriage Equality want to attend such an event? Some might... Read more

Throughout my entire faith journey with all of its up’s and down’s I have tried to remain rooted in a community of faith. I believe that humans, created in the image of the Triune God who is, fundamentally and eternally, a relationship, have an intrinsic need for community. It is our deepest longing- to be united with God and with one another. And it is when we separate from community and embrace isolation that we begin to devolve spiritually, mentally,... Read more

I am currently sitting in a beautiful retreat center on the top of a massive hill in San Anselmo, California on the stunning campus of San Francisco Theological Seminary, a seminary of the Presbyterian Church (USA). I have been invited here, along with 150 faith leaders, to be a part of the launch of the seminaries new Center for Innovation in Ministry, the newest effort of the seminary to prepare innovative Christian leaders to minister effectively in our rapidly evolving world. I... Read more

Yesterday, reports began to surface out of Houston, Texas that the attorneys of the city have subpoenaed pastors who have been vocally opposed to the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance. The subpoenas request that the a select group of Houston area Pastors turn over “all speeches, presentations, or sermons related to HERO, the Petition, Mayor Annise Parker, homosexuality, or gender identity prepared by, delivered by, revised by, or approved by you or in your possession.” While I have my own personal... Read more

Dear Church- Let me start off this letter by expressing my deep love and appreciation for you. I have been an active participant in the community of faith for about 10 years now, and I have been profoundly blessed, cared for, loved, and inspired to be a better human being through you. I have also seen — and even participated in — some of your ugliest and most unfaithful moments in recent history. But through all of these experiences, nothing... Read more

The following is a small, unedited excerpt from my upcoming book, Nomad: Not-So-Religious Thoughts on Faith, Doubt, and the Journey In Between.  During the summer of my freshman year in college, I went on a choir tour to Greece and Cyprus. During our tour of Athens, after climbing up the long, rugged staircase that leads to the Acropolis, we took a moment to stop and look out over the ancient city. The view was breathtaking. As we began to wander around the... Read more

Post by: Vince Schiller, Contributor  On the 20th of September last month, the United Nations met in New York, and there Emma Watson (who recently became the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador) spoke about women’s equality. It wasn’t entirely what would be expected though. You might anticipate that she would highlight the inequality that women face worldwide, which she did. But what was unexpected (and brilliant) was her insistence that women’s equality is more than just an issue about women. Emma Watson’s... Read more

Hey Friends of Revangelical! I just wanted to take a moment to let you know a little bit of what I have been up to over the last couple of weeks and why the content on the blog has been really slim. As you may know, about three weeks ago, an organization called Evangelicals for Marriage Equality launched with the mission of changing the hearts and minds of evangelical christians on the issue of civil marriage equality. I have the honor of serving... Read more

Yesterday, a piece went live on Huffington Post about my work with Evangelicals for Marriage Equality. In that piece, I made a statement about the decline of evangelical influence in America. However, the statement I made was originally in the context of a 30 minute conversation with the reporter about how the evangelical stance on issues like Marriage Equality are causing many millennials to leave the church, and I wanted to offer a correction to the printed quote. In the... Read more

There comes a point for many of us when everything seems to go from a sharp black and white to a dozen shades of grey. All of the things we once were so sure about in life now become up for grabs. All of our desires, beliefs, and convictions begin to seem a lot less resolute, and we begin to feel like the ground beneath us is beginning to crumble. We try to grasp on to something to give us... Read more
