  • Hey Simcha, I bet you know the answer to this! Is a mother who is breastfeeding exclusively required to fast during Lent?

    • simchafisher

I do! Breastfeeding mothers are exempt from fasting. When I am breastfeeding exclusively and feel like I wouldn’t be able to function if I were fasting, I will, for instance, only eat food I don’t especially like, or something like that – or fast from something else, like internet or radio.

“Those who are excused from fast or abstinence Besides those outside the age limits, those of unsound mind, the sick, the frail, pregnant or nursing women according to need for meat or nourishment, manual laborers according to need, guests at a meal who cannot excuse themselves without giving great offense or causing enmity and other situations of moral or physical impossibility to observe the penitential discipline.”

My daughter tells me that Muslim women are also exempt from fasting when pregnant or breastfeeding . . . but they have to make up for it later. Bastards.

        • That must make menopause hell.

      • Thanks! I was hoping that was the answer, because I don’t handle fasting well to begin with (either physically or temperamentally). I am giving up sweets today, which is a big deal in and of itself.
