That’ll preach.

Huh! I’d always assumed it was a Master’s thesis and completely blown past the “partial fulfillment of Bachelor of Arts” bit.

Still, I’m assuming someone red-penned her work before she submitted that, since it is stilll a published piece of work that can be pulled off the shelf at the library.

Yeah, the Senior thesis is apparently a Princeton thing; like supper clubs. Which I know from reading trashy novels, incidentally. They are surprisingly well edited for an undergraduate work.

Yeah, the Senior thesis is apparently a Princeton thing; like supper clubs.

There are other schools that do it too. I seem to recall that my friend who went to Penn did one and I think at least some of the undergrads at AU did.

I didn’t subject myself to reading Hitchens’ other columns from around
that time, but that one seems to be part and parcel of his raging
anti-Islamic bigotry. He’s one of those people who totally lost their
shit after 9/11 and never recovered. Being OTT about a connection to the
Nation of Islam fits right in with his issues. As a charming bonus the
column is also chock full of white ‘splaining and sexism.

Along with Hitchens’ raging misogyny, as seen in this charming article in Vanity Fair. There’s a nice takedown of it over on The Hathor Legacy.

Hitchens, if we’re talking about Christopher Hitchens, has at best provisional intellectual authority.  The guy’s pretty good in debates with theists, where he’s putting in stark terms immoralities done in the name of religion or even abetted by faith thereof, though that may only be my belief there.

Beyond that, he’s at his best where it’s intellectually honest to offend.

Put him on Islam, put him on his support of George W. Bush, get him on the War on Terror, and… well… he does what he does, which is offend.

But, in general, appealing to authority isn’t that good, anyway.  Everybody gets to reserve the right to disagree.

Oh man, I had repressed that stupid, stupid Vanity Fair article. Hitchens is a complete ass, but I swear I don’t hate him nearly as much as I do the people who give him the public space to spew his idiocy. The fact that anyone considers him a “public intellectual” is just ridiculous.

Speaking of “class warfare”, have you guys seen this?

    http://slatest.slate.com/posts/2011/09/28/ppp_daily_kos_poll_majority_of_republicans_tea_party_support_oba.html

The Public Policy Polling survey, commissioned by the Daily Kos and labor union SEIU,
found that the support for the so-called “Buffett Rule” wasn’t limited
to only liberals as one might expect: Two in three Republicans, or 66
percent, said they’re in favor of the proposal.

    and

Even self-identified tea partiers, the weakest supporters, are at 52-29

Even the Tea Partiers (!!) supports raising taxes on the rich…

To be perfectly fair to Michelle Obama, I took a look at the thesis. I read the first two chapters. It’s written in perfectly clear English, with a strong Social Science accent.  Pretending to be unable to understand the text is mendacious. Actually being unable to understand the text indicates a lack of education in the Social Sciences, which is not, in and of itself, a sin.

I haven’t had a chance to read the thesis — nor, I must admit, any particular desire to do so — but when you say “a strong Social Science accent”, do you mean it’s full of the technical jargon of the field. That is, the claim that “it’s not written in English” is valid in the same sense that saying a legal contract isn’t written in English, it’s written in Legalese, is valid?

If so, wouldn’t appropriate use of the technical language demonstrate a mastery of the field? That is, Michelle Robinson was showing that she had absorbed what she had studied and could apply the knowledge in new and appropriate ways. Which is the point of a thesis on any level, after all.

A senior thesis was required for an Honors degree at Duke — or was, [censored] decades ago.

Quite right. Now, I only read 2 chapters of the thesis (I never said it was particularly interesting, I just said it was readable) so I don’t know that she’s necessarily using the jargon correctly, but she clearly displayed knowledge of the language.

so the position on Michelle Robinson Obama’s thesis is:  Hey, no
students can write anymore anyway, so what’s the big deal?  Great.  80%
of the people on this blog write better than she could, and you know it.

Actually, my position on Mrs Obama’s thesis is: It has nothing to do with anything that I’m concerned about.

I have a subsequent position that you are being cowardly by switching to attacks on people you assume we respect every time you are unable to defend claims you make. Which is every conversation so far.
