Mitt Romney tells 533 lies in 30 weeks, Steve Benen documents them

I’ve written about or linked to a great deal here “chronicling Mitt’s mendacity” — to borrow Steven Benen’s phrase.

Mitt Romney says many, many things that are not true. He says this despite being in possession of the correct facts of the matter.

Which is to say that Mitt Romney lies. A lot. He lies more than any other national candidate for office in my lifetime. And I was born before the Nixon administration.

This is documented. Proven. Validated, verified, demonstrated, catalogued and quantified. Mitt Romney lies.

Here are 30 — 30! — of Benen’s weekly “chronicling” posts. These are all backed up and sourced. These are not assertions, interpretations or allegations. These are facts, actual instances.

Over the past 30 weeks, Mitt Romney has told lie after lie after lie: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX, XXI, XXII, XXIII, XXIV, XXV, XXVI, XXVII, XXVIII, XXIX, XXX.

Click those links. Read the lists. List after list of lie after lie. Hundreds of them — 533, to be exact, although Benen does not make any claim to providing a comprehensive chronicle.

This is unprecedented. “We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers,” Romney’s pollster, Neil Newhouse, said.

This has produced what James Fallows calls the “post-truth” age — a relentlessly dishonest onslaught of brazen falsehoods with which the media and the political system are struggling to cope. What do you do when every article, every “fact-check,” every arbiter denounces a lie and corrects it, but then a politician just keeps repeating it?

It’s remarkable to behold.

One of the weirder aspects of this for me is watching this unfold in the politically conservative culture of my evangelical world. The most partisan evangelical conservatives are also those most likely to rant against “relativism” and to trumpet their status as defenders of “absolute truth.” Those same folks will dismiss this post — and all 30 of Benen’s posts above — as mere partisan attacks without ever bothering to examine the 533 factual instances of Mitt’s mendacity, chronicled.

That’s the only cognitive defense they have, I guess. Jam fingers in ears and shout la-la-la-you’re-being-partisan!

Because, you see, the fact that Mitt Romney said something he knew to be false is a partisan fact. And the fact that he has done this at least 533 times in the past 30 weeks is also partisan.

I suppose the other approach for Romney defenders who cannot bear to face the fact of those 533 facts will be to angrily pore over all of Benen’s lists, reading each one with a lawyerly eye.

Have at it. Please. Cherry-pick. Spin. Split hairs. Hand-wave away whichever lies you wish as mere misdemeanors and not full-fledged felonies against honesty.

But how many of those charges do you think you can get dismissed? 10 percent? 20 percent? Maybe, if you’re that sort of person and you work really hard at it — if you’re willing to get even more pedantic and semantic and technical than even you are usually comfortable with — maybe you could half convince yourself that 50 percent of those lies somehow shouldn’t really count against Romney.

That still leaves more than 260 lies. That still leaves Mitt Romney as a convicted liar, 260 times over. And at that point you’ll have to join your friends with their fingers in their ears.

But you’ll still know.

Because everyone knows. Mitt Romney lies. A lot. That is what he does. That is who he is. And friend or foe, he does not care if you know it.

Here’s a few whoppers from Obama’s previous lie fest in 2008

    To close Guantanamo
To unite people of this counrty
    100% transparency
No new taxes for familys under $250K
    No earmarks
To end income tax on seniors making under $50K
    No lobbyists in his administration
To resign if he doesn’t cut deficit in half
To bring all troops home within one year

Not a single one kept. Not one.

Watched Front line last night and listened to Obama’s high school friends talking about all the weed they smoked everyday and on into college days. Why doesn’t the mainstream media report this? Is this the person we want behind the desk in the Oval Office? I guarantee if Romney’s classmates exposed him for being a pothead the left wing media would eat him for lunch!

  • Italiangal15131

The man, MITT may not know what he says…Has he been checked for the beginning stages of Alzheimer.  Remember  President Regan.  Ann Romney is concerned about his “mental health” if he becomes President.

If you’re going to talk about that it would be nice to link to the TV show in question. Even a youtube clip would be nice.

Because it is the 21st century and no reasonable person gives a shit about this anymore.

Willard is a lier.I know for a fact. I had come to that conclusion long ago.  He talks about one thing to one crowd, and another, or even opposite thing to a different group of people, depending on how much money they have in they’re pocket. He is dishonest, and not worthy of being president.

He doesn’t lie the way he breathes, either. And he doesn’t act like a ten-year-old in an adult’s body.

There is a difference between a promise that he intended to keep but could not and a lie. He tried to close Gitmo. He couldn’t find anywhere that would take the prisoners. He tried working-together-ness and Republicans in Congress and out weren’t having any. The rest I’ll need citations for him having said them. (Unless you provided links already and Disqus stripped the formatting before sending the email notif, in which case ignore that. I’ll check when I’m on a computer that doesn’t block Patheos.) And then I will need citations for reason to believe that when he made those promises he did not mean to keep them.

For bonus points, provide evidence that Romney will do any of the things you object to Obama not doing. Don’t bother citing his desire to reduce earmarks, as we all know the Big Bird saga by now and we also all know that all the earmarks in the federal budget don’t add up even to a single percent of federal expenditures, and if we want to do the most damage to this country’s people and its scientific research by cutting one percent of federal expenditures, the thing to cut is all the earmarks.

…the left wing media, which fyi is almost entirely found on the Internet, has a really large contingent of people who think that, one, teenage behavior shouldn’t haunt one in adulthood, and two, marijuana ought to be legal under restrictions similar to those on tobacco. I suspect the mainstream media agrees with the first point if not the second. For evidence I present the way nobody is harping on teenage Romney having bullied a gay classmate for being gay. (Which is some orders of magnitude worse than Obama having smoked marijuana. And the bullying incident is proven and I don’t think the marijuana incident is.)

“I feel sorry for Minister Fudge,” said Luna as she, Draco, and Meghan walked up the stairs towards the seventh floor.

“Why?” Meghan asked, dancing backward a few steps with excitement.

“Because one person couldn’t possibly be as horrible as he is on purpose. You know how he keeps trying to have the goblin leaders assassinated so he can take over Gringotts, or how he’s secretly paying centaurs to tip their arrows with Love Potions so that people will be too busy plotting against each other to pay attention to him?”

“Now we do,” Draco said diplomatically. “What about it?”

“Well, I think he’s been infested.” Luna peered around, then lowered her voice. “With Polyticks.”

Meghan looked suitably impressed. “What’re those?”

“They’re swarms of little bloodsucking insects. Once they latch onto you, they bite you and inject their venom so they can keep sucking out your blood forever. The venom makes you want to talk for a long time without saying anything, and get power over other people by making everything so complicated they don’t know what to do, and do almost anything, even really terrible things, to keep your power.”

“Fudge isn’t the only one, then,” Draco said as they came abreast of the tapestry featuring the tutu-wearing trolls. “I think Umbridge has them even worse. Is there any way to get them off?”
“I’ll have to write Daddy and ask. Maybe he knows.”

You have a “news” organization headed by Rupert Murdoch that backs up the lies. There are people that watch Fox only. That is the only place that they get their information. Murdoch, not even born in this country has driven a wedge in our system of government. He did it in the U.K. and now he is doing it here. Like Canada we should outlaw lying “news”.

My concern is that presidential candidates are role models. Do we wonder why so many people cheat and lie, especially young people?

  • http://dpolicar.livejournal.com/ Dave

Do we wonder why so many people cheat and lie, especially young people?

    That’s a good point.

After all, before whichever thing I’m currently very concerned about started, people didn’t cheat and lie so much.

    And I know this, because…
    um…

Well, actually I don’t really know this.
But I’ll say it anyway, because it supports my pre-existing belief that this thing I’m currently very concerned about is very concerning.

And ultimately, who cares whether the argument I’m making is true? What’s important is that I defend the moral value of telling the truth, not that I actually tell the truth myself.

    Or something like that.

  • Bonkerrs

Fact or lie?  Or just stupid presumtiveness?

  • Supanup

Fact Check for Mitt Romney’s lies are redundant! Just let him speak and you know he is lying…

  • ARamirez

umm and where are these facts?  just sating that its not the truth does not make it a lie, where is the documentation?

  • http://apocalypsereview.wordpress.com/ Invisible Neutrino

    Tom Gee makes a point.

When the major figures in society contradict plain moral and ethical teachings, such as that lying and cheating is always punished (it’s not; statistically a CEO who rips off/asset strips/loots his company for personal gain often can abscond virtually with impunity), their role-modelling of acceptable behaviors for success (as defined by the society they live in) affects everybody else down the chain.

If someone like Romney can so shamelessly lie and lie and lie and receive no effective punishment for it, why should a kid who broke the next door neighbor’s window tell the truth either?

Obama lies.  Mitt Romney caught him in a lie the other night during the debate.  Of course, Candy Crowley from CNN sided with Obama, that’s because CNN is biased in favor of Obama.  Mitt Romney is a respectable man, much more respectable than Obama, who has dealings wtih crooks in Chicago (Tony Rezko) and who squanders taxpayer money on a lavish lifestyle and numerous vacations on my tax money.  I absolutely CANNOT take anothe four years like the past four years.  Obama is driving the country to bankruptcy!

  • COMALite J

PBS gets more like 0.0062% of the budget.

To put that in perspective, imagine a lower middle-class family of four that spends $50,000 per year, but earns somewhat less that and so has racked up some debt.

They decide that the 10-year-old has to sit in the car when the rest of the family goes to see one afternoon matinee movie once during the year, thus saving one $6 child matinee movie ticket.

That’s what the equivalent of completely eliminating all federal government spending on PBS would be.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Scott.McElhiney Redorblack Nigelbottom

Tada! A prime example of what this article is all about.  Presented with hundreds of documented lies about  Romney’s policies, about his past, about what has been done and what he will do… this person replies that Obama lies!  Media Bias!  Coverup by the mediator!  The president deals with crooks!  Spends his time on vacation!  No possibility of a reality check for this one.  Not one factual verifiable instance given… just throw a bunch of right wing talking points and hope something sticks.  Just keep throwing the accusations around Junbfrisco and watch your county burn while you fiddle.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Scott.McElhiney Redorblack Nigelbottom

Lies vs. unkept/unfulfilled campaign promises.  Two seperate issues if you think about it.  One is intentional, the other is dependent on others to implement.  I wholely agree that Obama hasn’t fulfilled my needs for restoring the constitution with us still in the wars, with NDAA and other draconian measures eating further away at our liberties, with drones being used to commit the same sort of war crimes Bush authorized with missiles and gunships.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Scott.McElhiney Redorblack Nigelbottom

source for those promises?  You start off with one he did make and he aknowledges that he has been unable to accomplish… then step straight into fantasy land.  He promised to unite people of this country?  No, he made it a goal to change government where WE unite regardless of race etcc…  He never claimed to have a magic wand.  To resign if he doesn’t cut the deficit in half?  Source please.  He promised to cut them in half by the end of his first term… it is projected not to happen until 2014.  Does that make it a lie with a completely obstructionist congress?  Find your quotes of him stating these things and get back to us.  That is the difference.. Romney is on video for pretty much every item on their list.  You respond with accusations that are probably based in reality… I suspect transparency was something like “we will be more transparent..” not 100% transparent. On earmarks he threatened his own party to veto them http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0111/48208.html  Just because you got an email screaming about these things doesn’t make them true lies or even real.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Scott.McElhiney Redorblack Nigelbottom

I have been hearing the “George Soros!” scream of the right wingers as a “Liberal Commie socialist trying to destroy America!” for years now no matter what the issue is.  Since I (and most people) have no idea who he actually is, I looked him up.  A kid that survived WW2 a Hungarian Jewish kid who survived the Nazis, got a job as a trader and developed the theory of reflexivity.  Got rich using that theory of cyclic markets and has given BILLIONS away trying to back the opening up of closed societies like Poland’s solidarity movement that we were all backing.  Now he is a damn liberal… not the guy who opened up communist counties to capitalism? LOL

  • Deanna Woods

It’s important to avoid relying on a single source for an argument, and Heritage Society is about as far right as a group can get.  It’s in their interest to agree with the GOP leadership at this time.  This Heritage Society, by the way, was the one that originally supported the mandate for health care which is in the Romneycare and which conservatives have attacked in Obamacare.  What’s also disconcerting about Romney’s pattern of falsehoods is that he persisted in them in spite of repeated fact-checking by various non-partisan sources, and even some partisan.  Comments that Romney has made in speeches or in the debate, for example, had to be corrected by his own staff.  As for Romney’s own fact-checking, it, too, is highly flawed. He repeated this week his assertion that Iran needed Syria as a link to water.  The two countries not only don’t border each other, Iran has two other links to water and doesn’t need Syria for that purpose at all.

  • bioengineer

Well, I made it through the first several pages of this tripe and couldn’t handle any more.  I would agree that some of the things mentioned are lies, but the vast majority of this stuff Mitt was right about.  Take the very first example, Obama’s apology tour.  Obama did have an apology tour, and he DID apologize for the USA.  He didn’t use the words “I’m sorry” but what he said amounted to the same thing.  He spoke of America behaving innapropriately, mistakes we’ve made and how we’re now going to do better, yada, yada.  You’re either an idiot or a liar to say he wasn’t apologizing.  I’m a conservative, a combat vet, and a Mormon, and I can’t stand Romney.  He is a liar.  I think he’ll be just as bad as Obama.  I was very curious to see a comprehensive list of Romney’s tales but instead found what I figured this would be, a bunch of liberal retards, hypocrites the lot of you.  Stop lying to yourselves then maybe you can complain about Romney.

To be fair, I’m quite curious to see, for example, a secular reason to oppose legal same-sex marriage that does not, if applied logically, also deny marriage to a subset of mixed-sex couples. This is something I expect I will never see.

I suppose bioengineer’s a drive-by and therefore it’s not worth calling zir on the ableism inherent in the R word. Shame.

This a highly moronic opinion. Obama the Messiah is a false god.

You liberals are too predictable when you want “legit” sources.

So all conservative sources of information, in order to be truly conservative, cannot have anyone looking over them to make sure the information is halfway congruent with reality?

No wonder conservatives are so often ill-informed.

I will leave everything else that is wrong about your post to other people, and just say this:

You’re a fucking asshole and the kind of person who’d sling that sort of ableist garbage does not deserve to have his opinion respected.

You may recall that Ann Coulter whipped out a similar insult in response to the third presidential debate.

You assume too much.  My thoughts are more along the lines of Ron Paul, I’d bring all the troops home today.  And this is in fact one of my beef’s with Romney.  But is Obama any better?  No.  It’s very interesting that you would put this on “you Americans.”  Don’t know where you from, but shall we list all the European nations intangled in foreign wars?

  • http://apocalypsereview.wordpress.com/ Invisible Neutrino

The fact that you don’t seem to think the USA should have to apologize for anything, anywhere, and that any admission that the USA is less than perfect is some kind of mortal embarrassment, tells me that as much as you might protest otherwise, the fact is that you’re acculturated in exactly the kind of Manifest Destiny thinking that led Shrub and his puppetmaster Cheney into trying to swagger around the world and bludgeoning two countries into submission (Iraq, Afghanistan) while saber-rattling at a third (Iran), all the while ignoring even the basics of international obligations (Kyoto, refusal to concur to the International Court jurisdiction, etc).

  • http://www.facebook.com/jrandyowens Randy Owens

Actually, I’m pretty sure he’s Canadian.  Still not European, though, and pretty much responsible for just as much warmongering as Australia.

    ETA: Oops, should’ve refreshed.

  • bioengineer

Are liberals always idiots?  First, I didn’t say whether the USA has anything to apologize for or not.  All I said is that Obama DID apologize.  This is an article that claims to document Romney’s lies.  Romney didn’t lie about this.  Obama did apologize.  I know it’s hard, but try to stay on topic.  Again, you assume way too much.  I would completely agree that our leaders actions in the Middle East have not been well thought out.  This business about international obligations though, I LOL at that.
