Olga Korbut 1972

Really tied up with a project that might keep me busy for much fo the week, but thought you’d enjoy this look at Olga Korbut, 1972 – quite amazing on the uneven bars and floor exercises. She was amazing on every apparatus, but here she is breathtaking and bold. And I think much of what she did on the bars (and the bit on the floor where she jumps and then seems to land on her sternum) are no longer allowed because of their difficulty and danger, but we can still see them thanks to You Tube.

And of course, Nadia -

Thanks for that blast from the past. I was a 2nd grader when Olga forged a new path for international gymanstics establishment. She “pixiefied” gymnastics. [Poor Ludmilla Tourischeva!] Nadia perfected it. They both influenced me profoundly as a child. My dad even bought us a “balance beam” for the backyard [an unpadded piece of wood that we put up on cinder blocks]. That became my sport and I loved it.

Gymnastics haven’t been the same since they moved the bars apart. As if that’s going to make it any safer. They are still going to end up with broken arms, broken legs, and blown-out knees, as my sister can attest.

So cool! I kind of miss the way they used to do the bars. My girls loved it, too. Thanks!
