Venerating Mary

This is a gorgeous bit of Orthodox chant (and lovely images) thanks to the invaluable Crescat, who is otherwise torturing us with obnoxious images of pop-culture messiah, or achingly beautiful scenes of Malta. Check her out!

O Virgin Birthgiver, rejoice…
…Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
For thou hast borne the Saviour of our souls!

beautiful! there’s a favorite Slavonic (now song in derivative languages) Marian hymn I’ve heard and sung at a Ukrainian church many times for Good Friday- longer and more solemn than that one, but so beautiful– it’s like their Stabat Mater if anyone’s interested.

Have you tried chanting the translation with the same chant? I have tried (as a non-muscian can) and find “it works”.

Beautiful … thanks for finding and posting.

God bless you and yours …

Have you heard Rachmaninoff’s arrangement of the text? It’s pretty remarkable. Here’s one of the better recordings I was able to find on youtube: link
