Have Him Your Way

First things first, this is NOT a political blog. Second, yes that is Jesus’ face on Uncle Sam. If you like, you can call him “Uncle Jesus”, and yes he does want you. We’re not professional theologians, just a couple of guys whose experience as Christians has been, for good or bad, definitively American. So who is the American Jesus? Well that all depends on who you ask. In America you can have Jesus however you want. We’ve got bearded white Jesus, fundamentalist KJV Jesus, catholic Jesus, cowboy Jesus, rock n roll Jesus, patriotic Jesus, social justice Jesus, environmentalist Jesus, any Jesus you want we’ve got. In our humble opinion, that’s not a good thing. Somewhere in trying to relate Jesus to the world around us the Jesus of the Bible, more often than not, has gotten lost. The Jesus who’s culturally and politically subversive is watered down to the point that being a follower of Christ is the same as being a good citizen or a good (fill in the blank). We don’t have an answer to the problem, but we do want to stop framing Jesus in only an American context and instead let the Jesus of the bible speak for himself, even when we don’t know with to do with that. As proud and grateful as we are our for this country that has given the church so much freedom to live out her faith, the reality is America, not only isn’t the most important thing in Christian history, it’s not the most important thing in Christianity today. We don’t have a monopoly on the Christian faith. We must listen to our brothers and sisters across the world if we are to really want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection.

Now that that mini soapbox is over, in this blog we will be sharing, laughing, and probably crying over the best and worst of our uniquely American version of Christianity. If we find a good video we’ll post it. If we read something that gets us going, we’ll write about it. And if we don’t, then its probably because we have better things to do with our time. Hopefully you will enjoy our random musings, but if not……well then you’re probably a communist.
