A while back I blogged a video put out by the Mormon Church.  The video shows a young man walking in on his roommate while the roommate is watching porn and urges people to tell others about “porn addictions.”  Much in the same way one might assume talking about eating too many donuts would fly under the banner of “bad diet” even without those words being specifically mentioned, many (myself included) took the term “porn addiction” to include masturbation. But... Read more

A friend of mine just left this comment on one of my posts (the one about megachurch pastors living like kings) and I thought it needed to be shared. When I was a Christian, I used to say “if I had no morals, I’d start a porn site.”But now that I know better, If I *really* had no morals…I’d start a church. It’s a pity that wouldn’t fit on a bumper sticker.  And like children growing up, it’s amazing how... Read more

Inside edition did a report recently on the opulent lifestyle of mega preachers. The whole thing is depressing.  It’s depressing that people can con those who love them to that degree.  It’s depressing that so many can be so clearly and obviously conned.  But the most depressing part for me was when Kenneth Copeland did a fly-by in his new 20 million dollar private jet (the fastest money can buy) for the people who bought it, almost all of whom... Read more

This is an epic victory. In a major milestone for gay rights, the United States government plans to expand recognition of same-sex marriages in federal legal matters, including bankruptcies, prison visits and survivor benefits. Attorney General Eric Holder said the Justice Department will issue a memo Monday that recognizes same-sex marriages “to the greatest extent possible under the law.” The federal expansion will include 34 states where same-sex marriage isn’t legal, but the new federal benefits being extended to those... Read more

Hemant posted this image from a recent poll by the Public Religion Research Institute: And Hemant is right, we should pat ourselves on the back.  Religion is diminishing, a result for which many of us have worked very hard.  As the next generation becomes adults we will see the world bend more toward the side of reason, toward positions opposite the ones propped up almost exclusively by religious belief.  Gay marriage is coming, so is women’s healthcare.  But that isn’t... Read more

Check out this screen cap from AnnKirkpatrick.com: There’s two really big parts: “Kirkpatrick for Congress” and “Donate”.  This is done intentionally because most people don’t read the fine print.  This is what is generally referred to as “Phishing” in the online scamming world.  However, if you elect to donate through that great big donate button, the funds will actually be going to Kirkpatrick’s opponent. Annkirkpatrick.com is one of a series of websites (TIME has found 16, so far) the NRCC... Read more

As the atheist movement grows we have begun to shun many of our own.  Sometimes this is justifiable, sometimes it isn’t.  In either case it creates resentment that prevents us from learning from one another.  That infighting turns people away from atheism – including people who want to leave their church but worry about finding a stable community in which to land. The Kansas City Atheists, one of the groups that has most impressed me, is forming a new organization:... Read more

You gotta be pretty desperate to impeach someone if this is what you have to resort to: This week, Rep. Nick Marshall, a Parkville Republican, filed articles of impeachment that allege that in signing an executive order allowing legally married same-sex couples to file joint tax returns in Missouri, Nixon ignored the state constitution. The constitution prohibits the state from recognizing same-sex marriages. Nixon says he had no choice. The federal tax code is tied to the Missouri tax code,... Read more

I got sent this photo by a friend of mine who still lives in Arkansas.  This lovely billboard resides in Harrison which is about an hour from my hometown. Damn, they’re on to us.  I knew the crazy idea that you can oppose racial inequality without opposing white people would only sell for so long… Read more
