The theremin is… …is an early electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact by the thereminist (performer). It is named after the westernized name of its Russian inventor, Léon Theremin, who patented the device in 1928. The instrument’s controlling section usually consists of two metal antennas which sense the relative position of the thereminist’s hands and control oscillators for frequency with one hand, and amplitude (volume) with the other. The electricsignals from the theremin are amplified and sent to a loudspeaker. It is essentially played just by moving one’s hands through the air.  You might... Read more

It was all over the news yesterday that Mark Herring, the newly-elected Virginia Attorney General, is going to reverse his predecessor’s defense of Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban. Much like his counterpart in Pennsylvania, Herring won’t defend a law he believes to be unconstitutional. Republicans in Virginia, because of their belief in government non-interference in private matters and smaller government altogether (cue sarcasm tag here) claim they will mount a vigorous defense of the ban in Virginia’s courts. This prompted a... Read more

It came last night.  I didn’t eat a lot yesterday and can’t manage breakfast today.  Content might be light today while I go for a walk. I’m feeling alright, just my body is being weird.  :\ Read more

This image made me smile.  🙂 People who write things in the 21st century are more enlightened about morality and science than writers from a particularly ignorant part of the world 2,000 years ago.  Who knew?  And if you insist that god inspired the contents of the bible, you’re just painting your all-knowing, all-wise god as a being with less scientific and moral sense than modern high schoolers.  Of course, the trappings of the bible are not “ignorant”…they’re parables.  Either... Read more

So this happened: Larry Michael Bollinger, 68, of Gastonia, has been in federal custody since his arrest in May 2012. He pleaded guilty in January 2013 to molesting four Haitian girls between the ages of 11 and 16. One of the victims said Bollinger offered to pay her in food and money in exchange for sexual acts, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Bollinger was the pastor of Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran church until 2004. He volunteered at... Read more

We’ve all seen pictures of the Jesus wants a hug statue in Brazil. It turns out that recently god has been trying to send a message regarding the statue. The right thumb of the statue was damaged during a violent storm last week, and its right middle finger and part of its head were hit last month. You know if lightning had struck during a pride parade that Christian leaders everywhere would be straining their vocal chords to the point... Read more

I know, I know…god’s justice is so much greater than man’s – but when you fire someone a couple of times for inappropriate behavior with children at a church, it might be time to stop placing him around kids (and even call the terrestrial authorities).  What you definitely don’t do is recommend them to a daycare.  Otherwise stuff like this might happen: A civil court has found a California church financially liable for over $100,000 after the church recommended an... Read more

Remember when a group of atheists wanted to put a Happy Winter Solstice banner beside the nativity scene on the Baxter County courthouse lawn and were denied?  Then, when pressed, County Judge Mickey Pendergrass said that atheists could have their own display if they went through the proper legal channels (which they had done) but that Pendergrass would not allow banners specifically?  You’ll never guess what’s on the courthouse lawn now: It reads “do you have an hour of your... Read more
