Judge Terrence Kern just handed down a pretty tough cheese to swallow for the state of Oklahoma: their ban on marriage equality is unconstitutional.  And Kern didn’t do this with language that could be called coddling.  Speaking of the plaintiffs, Kern said: “The Bishop couple has been in a loving, committed relationships for many years,” the judge said. “They own property together, wish to retire together, wish to make medical decisions for one another, and wish to be recognized as... Read more

I’m a pretty big Arkansas Razorbacks fan (cue Ed Brayton making a joke in the comments).  Last night my beloved hogs were playing Kentucky, a team with a roster bursting with McDonald’s All-Americans.  Arkansas was ahead by three with time winding down, but Kentucky dropped a three to send it to overtime. In overtime it came down to the final seconds.  As the final shot went up, all of Kentucky’s players watched it soar toward the rim unmoving, as if... Read more

Brian Panetta was, until recently, the music teacher at Sandusky Central Catholic School in Ohio.  In his five years there he “vastly expanded the entire music program, with the school’s band expanding from 18 to 50 members.”  The school just fired him because he’s in love with a man and not a woman, which apparently means more than his talent as a music teacher. But the pope is so nice!  How could this happen?  Turns out the pope is, and... Read more

The letters keep pouring in from religious people who think if the government doesn’t give them exclusive rights to government property then they are somehow oppressed and forbidden from celebrating Christmas.  And Communism.  Communism everywhere.  If you need to get up to speed, click here to read about a County Judge in Baxter County giving Christians space on the courthouse lawn but denying atheists. Here’s a letter from today (my thoughts when reading it are in red): From Diane McLane,... Read more

Yesterday I wrote about how some of my anorexic tendencies are resurfacing.  So it wasn’t a total waste of a post I also wrote about how I manage.  One of the things I do is avoid mirrors.  At my lowest points I still hallucinate with mirrors (though this hasn’t happened in some time, praise be to science).  This means brushing my teeth in another room and staring at my feet when I have to go to the bathroom. So yesterday... Read more

The last few days I’ve been having some issues with anorexia resurfacing.  It’s not terrible, and I’m far more equipped to handle it now than in the past.  But it’s a slow news day and my head just isn’t in writing today on account of it.  I’m gonna chill, watch Sherlock and Once Upon A Time with Michaelyn, and hopefully be back tomorrow. Leave hugs. For those who wonder what I do when I’m having down times with this, here’s... Read more

I present this with no commentary.  It speaks for itself. Ironically, lots of the people who see this and nod their agreement voted for George W. Bush and supported him for the entirety of his time in office…even as the economy tanked.  But now that Obama is in charge and the economy is recovering their lack of concern over an actually collapsing economy has given way to all kinds of concern about the economy potentially collapsing – and all for... Read more

I normally don’t write much on weekends, but this is just too…good?  Well, it’s pretty lame, but you know what I mean. Back story: the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List put up dishonest billboards about an Ohio politician.  The billboards were blocked and the courts have upheld the decision. During the 2010 election cycle, Susan B. Anthony List accused then-Rep. Steven Driehaus (D-Ohio), who was running for reelection against Republican Steve Chabot, of endorsing taxpayer-funded abortions by voting for... Read more

I think Matt Dillahunty is the best debater atheism has.  But holy shit, did he ever put a particularly powerful beat down on Cliffe Knechtle. Knechtle did a great deal of preaching.  Dillahunty did a great deal of owning. I’ve been on stage with Dillahunty in a debate.  It was one of the greatest honors of my life. Read more
