Pastor Frank Schaefer defied the Methodist church last month when he said he would perform a gay wedding and then followed up on it, despite threats from the church to strip him of his credentials.  Well, the church has followed up as well, but Schaefer has refused to part with them willingly.  Good on him, but his statement to the media boggled me: “My conscience does not allow me to uphold the entire discipline because it contains discriminatory provisions and... Read more

In response to the American Atheists billboard in Times Square, Answers in Genesis (a group aptly named if the question is “How do scientists not say the universe was created?”) put up one of their own.  Then Fox News uploaded it to their facebook. Who rejoices in that?  Who blesses the fates for a being of ultimate power who didn’t bat an eyelash as he killed virtually every human being on earth by the painful method of drowning?  Even if... Read more

I saw on /r/aww that somebody made a sweater for their snake. 1.  Snakes don’t generate body heat, so the sweater wouldn’t ever work. 2.  They don’t have arms. 3.  The sweater still owns. Thursday Michaelyn and I depart for the backwoods of Mountain Home, Arkansas.  There won’t be any posts on Thursday, and for about a week there will be quick quips about the news and some feel good posts, but no lengthy take downs (unless the spirit REALLY... Read more

Just read this story and it made me boggle at what religion can do to a mind: A Russian actor best known for announcing a run for his country’s presidency two years ago has stated that he would like to put all gay people “in the oven”. Ivan Okhlobystin, a popular star with fiercely conservative views, told an audience in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk that all homosexuals should be burned alive. According to the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda, in comments translated... Read more

William Lane Craig has an opinion article fittingly posted at Fox News.  It’s titled “A Christmas gift for atheists — five reasons why God exists.”  I read it.  If it is a gift, it’s the kind that’s worth less than the time it would take to return it for a refund. Let’s just dive right in: For atheists, Christmas is a religious sham. In the very first sentence WLC begins being wrong.  Xmas is different for all atheists, but for... Read more

In ESPN’s guidelines is a passage that reads: “ESPN does not accept advertising that consists of, in whole or in part, political or religious advocacy or issue-oriented advertising.” And written in invisible ink right afterward is the phrase “…unless Bill O’Reilly, Sarah Palin, and their ilk complain enough.”  ESPN initially rejected an ad for SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center because of its overt Christian message.  But now it will air during a football game this Saturday. Here’s the ad:... Read more

Ok, I’m gonna level with you people.  Michaelyn’s finals are next week, which means there’s no school today.  Also a new champ just came out in League of Legends.  This puts me in a remarkably cheery mood (but still very grumpy, because that’s my M.O.).  I’m in the mood to post some happy stuff and spread some cynical holiday cheer, so here’s another funny video I came across today. Jimmy Kimmel talks about Megyn Kelly’s not-at-all-racism and gives us a... Read more
