(AoftheANews) Confidential documents given to AoftheA News show that the USCCB – back when it was called the National Conference of Catholic Bishops – seriously considered modifying the Mass dismissal in 1970, the year after the Mass of Paul VI was first promulgated. AoftheA News obtained these documents from an anonymous source within the USCCB, and the details within provide yet another glimpse at the confusion that erupted upon the introduction of the Ordinary Form. In this case, it appears that sanity had... Read more

It had never occurred to me before, not until Father John asked the rhetorical question during his homily this morning. “Why did Thomas stick with the disciples for a whole week, after Easter Sunday? He must have thought, ‘These guys are crazy! Believing they’ve seen the Lord? That’s just nuts!’ And yet he was with them a week later, when Christ appeared again.” I had never thought of that before. Why did Thomas hang around? Scripture doesn’t tell us. It is interesting to meditate on, though.... Read more

You hear them all the time – pithy sayings and quotes attributed to God that really shouldn’t be. Some people believe they’re Scriptural…but they’re not. Sometimes people speak out of a genuine, well-intentioned heart, in an attempt to soothe a loved one experiencing a difficult time. I think most people say them because they have no idea of what to say in certain circumstances – they just seem natural to say. And I think some people are mistakenly attributing to God an attitude or outlook any reasonable person would... Read more

A longtime Catholic blogger and friend of AoftheA, The Ironic Catholic, has launched a program for families looking to pass on the Catholic faith to their kids. They called it Peanut Butter & Grace (PB & Grace, officially), and it looks great. They created an Indiegogo funding page: What if you could help 10,000 Catholic families inspire their kids to live more fully in the love of Christ? What if you could hand all those parents books and digital resources that made... Read more

You know, just because there’s no record in Scriptures of it ever occurring, doesn’t mean Jesus didn’t first warm up his crowds. SERMON ON THE MOUNT “My previous Sermon on the Mount Tour stop was in my hometown of Nazareth, and boy, that crowd was rough. They were so rough, I was practically dismounted. I tell ya, no respect. What’s that saying, you can always go home again? Verily, verily, I say unto you – you can’t.” FEEDING THE 5000 “Wow, what a great crowd.... Read more

“And they crucified him, and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour, when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read ‘The King of the Jews’. And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. And those passing by derided him, wagging their heads, and saying, ‘Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build... Read more

This is a match made in Progressive Christianity heaven, right? Sr Joan Chittister, as progressive as they come in the Catholyc world, afforded this recognition, named for the retired Episcopal bishop who doesn’t believe in original sin, Christ’s atoning death on the cross, or the Resurrection. With so much in common, they’ll make a cute couple. Here’s a bit of the announcement: It is with great pleasure that we announce a new project to honor our friend, the Right Reverend John... Read more

(AoftheA News) AoftheA News has learned that Pope Francis had offered to wash the feet of the writers of a widely read, popular traditionalist Catholic group blog this upcoming Holy Thursday, but that the blog turned down the request. Emails obtained from the Vatican via an FOIA request revealed the exchange occurred during the first week of March. Pope Francis made the request to the group blog Rotating Charlie, stating “During my pontificate, I have washed the feet of prisoners and invalids... Read more
