Risk aversion

Risk aversion April 17, 2003

Our natural tendancy to risk aversion fascinates me this article Guardian Unlimited | The Guardian | Girl, 13, dies after being hit on head by remote-controlled model plane immediately makes me question my long held desire to buy such a ultimate boys toy and yet I am quite happy to drive on the roads knowing full well that according to one magazine if I start driving for work I will be as likely to be killed as a quary worker. How we perceive risk is not at all clear, with even regular fliers struggling to remind themselves that the plane is safer than the car and after the relatively rare train crashes we all become nervous of trains yet keep on with our reckless car use! I think that the only way I keep sane is genuinely believing that there is a sovereign God behind all these freak chance events. I wouldnt like to try and explain that to the parents of this 13 your old girl who died though.
