Emotion tied up in words

Emotion tied up in words December 10, 2003

It is interesting to think about words, and what they mean not just on a theoretical level but emotionally. One of the things that divides us is how we feel when we hear certain words. Take for example death. Many people assume that everyone is afraid of death. That is not the case. For those who genuinely believe that there is no judgement then why fear it? For those who look to it as a way out of their problems, why shy from it?

OF course the very idea of judgement is another one, in some languages judgement can be a positive thing- more like assessment, but in English although we know we can be judged in a positive way, the word always seems to have negative emotional connetations.

There are many examples of this, and sometimes changing subtly one word used in a sentance the entire meaning can change! I guess thats what singles out a good writer from the likes of you and I.
