Stop the presses: Adrian quotes from the New Living Translation! October 16, 2005

Carla has been very kind about todays sermon:

“Today I wasn’t able to go to church, so this afternoon I sat down and listened to Adrian Warnock preach on the good news when feeling rejected. I’ve never listened to one of his sermons before, but let me just tell you, this one is very good. Very edifying, convicting, thought provoking…..

She continues in characteristically kind manner, but then right at the end she let the cat out of the bag by saying “I forgive you however for quoting out of the NLT. (eek)”

Regular readers will know I mainly use the ESV. To tell the truth, I probably deserve to be ridiculed for quoting out of the NLT today because I chose it (only for one verse mind!) purely and simply because it used the word “accept” in stead of “recieve” and that word fitted my sermon better since it is the opposite of rejection. I would say that is normally a very bad thing for a preacher to do and I wouldnt blame you all for taking a swipe at me one after the other.

I have to say though, that the NLT does seem to have its place in my view- as a dynamic translation it seems to hit the mark more than most of the others I read. A number of our students have it. Possibly if you are going to only have two translations, an ESV and an NLT would be a good combination – I shall have to look into the NLT a bit more I think
