What is it with yeast? A reader asks about Leviticus

I received this email this morning from a friend:

I thought I would give you a progress report on my Bible reading . I have now completed Leviticus, and to be perfectly honest I found it a bit hard going. Here are some thoughts I would appreciate your brief comments on.

The laws must have been imposssible to keep, life must have been one long round of sacrifices and ceremonies.

In your opinion; which of the two is it easier to live uder The law, or grace?

What is it with yeast?

I have blogged about my thoughts on Leviticus before. It seems to me it is in the bible almost as a test- if you can get through it, great its all relatively easy going from here – before you know it you will have reached the psalms. But if you can read and understand then you are well on the way to being a mature bible student.

My reader hits the nail on the head- the laws WERE impossible to keep. Which is why the Christian is not under the law. The law drives us to Christ, but Dave is right to ask which is harder to live under, becauase grace properly understood examines, challenges and changes us in ways we cannot imagine when we first hear the simple gospel.

Since the gospel gives us the power to change living under it should be an easy yoke and a light burden, but having said that the demands of grace and serving Christ are in fact greater than those of the law- we are called in the new testament to be perfect and to have a righteousness that exceeds that of the pharisees. I am no believer in a gospel that leaves us unchanged.
