Jonathan Edwards teaches the doctrine of perseverance in this passage, which is about as far removed from the easy believism most understand when they say “once saved always saved” as you can get. ” . . .as soon as ever a soul has put forth one act of faith towards Jesus, it becomes interested in his righteousness, and so in all the benefits that are purchased by it. The soul is thenceforward united to Christ, and Christ is his and... Read more

The shocking nature of the doctrine that God’s grace is irresistible was hammered home to me by this quote. If this notion does not make you grateful to God that YOU should be so blessed by him, I don’t know what will. . . .the Calvinistical notion of sovereign and arbitrary grace, whereby some, with the very same sincerity of endeavors and the same degree of endeavors and the same use of means, shall have the success which is denied... Read more

There is none of the five points of calvinism that are associated with more confusion than the one commonly called Limited Atonment or particular atonement. The problem comes because we do not tend to understand exactly what Calvinists have historically meant by this point, nor do we understand the alternatives on either side. Logic can be very treacherous when it comes to doctrinal understanding. So, in the following quote from Edwards we will find him steering a middle ground between... Read more

Jonathan Edwards masterfully argues that it is necessary that God determined that at least one individual would be saved, or else there would have been the risk that Jesus work would have been done in vain. The implication of this argument is of course that once you have accepted that at least one person was chose effectually by God to be saved, it is surely easy to believe that all Chrisitans were in fact chosen by God before the foundation... Read more

I am planning on sharing some short quotes from Jonathan Edwards on the five points of Calvinism. Here is the first on the “T” of the so-called “TULIP”. He simply defines Total depravity: . . . the Calvinistic doctrine of the total depravity and corruption of man’s nature, whereby his heart is wholly under the power of sin, and he is utterly unable, without the interposition of sovereign grace, savingly to love God, believe in Christ, or do anything that... Read more

John Piper shares some interesting perspectives on the fullness of the holy Spirit in a sermon he gave last november. It is intruiging how he endeavours to sidestep the issue of identifying baptism with the Holy Spirit as either conversion or a second blessing. Piper seems keener that we are all open to more infusions of the Holy Spirit whatever our theological position. He is discussing John 1:25-34 Jesus immerses people in the Spirit. That’s what the word baptize means.... Read more

Hugh Palmer was kind enough to record the following interview with me and Tope Koleoso while he was with us last Sunday. It was a lot of fun, and we spoke about how he felt folowing in John Stott’s shoes, the similarities and differences between All Souls and Jubilee Church, and how it is the gospel that allows us to unite. You can watch it online here or download the mp3. Read more

Yesterday, the Rector of All Souls (who follows in John Stott’s shoes) joined us at Jubilee Church, London, my home church. His sermon was greatly enjoyed by our church, again demonstrating the unity that is ours around the gospel. The video is now available below in four parts, or you can download the mp3 or video files. <br> <p>Your browser does not support iframes.</p><br>Part One<br><embed src=”http://content.bitsontherun.com/players/jMrz2VJ3-5829.swf” width=”525″ height=”314″ allowfullscreen=”true”></embed><br><br>Part Two<br><embed src=”http://content.bitsontherun.com/players/S7yFs1CG-5829.swf” width=”525″ height=”314″ allowfullscreen=”true”></embed><br><br>Part Three<br><embed src=”http://content.bitsontherun.com/players/cmJTZ2Ng-5829.swf” width=”525″ height=”314″ allowfullscreen=”true”></embed>,<br><br>Part Four<br><embed... Read more

Well, this blogger is back, and as you can tell from the title of this post having an identity crisis. In fact, I should warn you that I am still not in fact fully back blogging. Until my book is actually ready to submit to my publishers, I plan on continuing to mostly limit my posting to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and this post like the following was written a while back. I have been thinking for some while about... Read more
