Last Sunday, my dear friend and leader, Tope preached the following sermon at Jubilee Church, London. This was the begining of a series whereby we intend to preach through the letter. Many people say that Romans and Galatians prompted the Reformation. I think it is true to say that it is the book of Ephesians that prompted what some people are calling the “second reformation.” Certainly it is foundational to what I believe as a reformed charismatic. In this sermon,... Read more

I’m back, but tired, and as usual, when I simply don’t have anything to say myself and it’s getting to the end of the week, I turn to one of the greatest living preachers—John Piper. Last Friday I quoted from his first talk in a series on suffering. Today I will quote from the second. It is striking how boldly he states that he believes in healing today, but in a context where this world in which we live is... Read more

John Piper has a glorious richness in his preaching repertoire. Almost every time he is invited to preach anywhere it seems he produces a brand new message. He makes the Bible fresh. Today I want to return to the habit of posting a quote from Piper on Fridays by sharing an astonishing quote from an amazing talk he recently gave: Let me underline one of the statements I’ve already made: Suffering is an essential part of your Christian existence. I... Read more

As many of you may already know, Dr. D. James Kennedy, well-known pastor, teacher, and evangelist died September 5th at his home in Florida after having suffered a cardiac arrest last December. Many Christians world-wide have been influenced by Dr. Kennedy, not the least of whom is Dr. Albert Mohler, who remembered Kennedy in this personal tribute titled “Excellency in All Things, and All Things to God’s Glory—The Legacy of Dr. D. James Kennedy,” Here is a portion of that... Read more

Literary criticism has a bad reputation amongst evangelical Christians. This is, of course, misplaced since viewing the Bible as literature is not an option. It is, after all, a book! Anyway, the good folks at Crossway have decided to do their best to help us understand how a literary view of the Bible is essential. Here is an extract of an early review of the book which is coming out next week. “The premiere benefit of the LSB is viewing... Read more

This book started life as a series of sermons. It is an encouragement to me to see that publishers seem to be reviving the sermon-book, which at one point looked to me like it was fading from use. Bell’s book is definitely aimed at the popular market, but any reader can learn much from what he has to say. If you are interested in how a charismatic interprets and applies 1 Corinthians, then this is a good place to start.... Read more

I thought I’d share this hymn with you today. It was written by William Booth, and a modern tune by a friend of mine has made it eminently singable today. Always good to remind ourselves of the need for revival! The music and mp3 are available from Kingsway. O GOD OF BURNING, CLEANSING FLAME Send the fire!Your blood-bought gift today we claim:Send the fire today!Look down and see this waiting host,And send the promised Holy Ghost; We need another Pentecost!Send the fire... Read more

We had a lot of fun with our American visitors over the weekend. Some of my kids and I went to London with them on Saturday. We visited St Paul’s, the Westminster area, and the Tower of London, which we reached by boat. It was a great day, whose highlight for me was surely the following quotes: Tamasin—”Why did you come all the way from America to look at all these dead people when there are plenty of living ones... Read more

The British and the Americans are at war once again. This time it is a more localized conflict than the War for Independence which, for a nation who has a history of over 1000 years, is really just yesterday. Fortunately the weapons of this latest war are words, although these are, of course, more deadly than nuclear bombs. (Proverbs 18:21) We have American visitors at the moment. My kids are confused. They can’t understand why a room that has a... Read more

As regular readers will already know, this week I am swiftly working through the glorious doctrines of grace—the so-called “TULIP.” Today we reach the end of our short series with the doctrine of the persevernace of the saints, which teaches that God will insure that genuine believers in Christ remain faithful to the end. I give the last words to Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones: “. . . the eternal God knows us and is interested in us and has a plan... Read more
