Well, I often ask you important theological questions from time to time. Today, I am going to ask a much more mundane one today – How large shall I go? I am of course talking about a home cinema system. I invited a new-found friend from church for dinner tonight and I defintiely had some ulterior motives. He runs a home entertainment business called Gold Entertainment in Enfield so I figured I’d get myself some free advice about getting a... Read more
One of my readers questioned me about my charismatic view of “a 2 stage receiving of the Spirit (if that’s what you mean), but essentially one of the problems that I would have with that is that it is not a unifying experience. By it’s very nature such a view creates a group of Christians who have had it and a group who have not. And that seems to me to need some serious scriptural backing when, as Stott says,... Read more

Whatever the makers of certain films would like us to believe, the authors of Together for the Gospel blog continue to demonstrate how it is possible for real men to have deeply emotionally satisfying and edifying relationships with each other without a hint of homosexuality being present. CJs description of how he met Mark Dever today was great, and the honour he holds him in is an example to all of us. Guys do you have other men that you... Read more
the blue fish is joining me in blogging through 1 Cor 12. He says it right about v1-3: “Essentially, Paul wants his reader to know that being spiritual is about proclaiming Jesus as Lord. Put another way: Being spiritual, is being gospel. We cannot consider anything about gifts of the Spirit without this as the foundation. No gifts will be genuinely manifest without the Holy Spirit. And the Spirit is only sure to be present when there is genuine confession... Read more
My Pastor preached a sermon entitled “Entrusted with life” this morning. It launced a new series which I am quite excited about. We were challenged to remember that everything we have has been entrusted to us by God- even life itself. God will hold us accountable for how we discharge the trust he has given us -as it says in 1 Cor 4:2 “it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy”. I am grateful to God for grace,... “I am constantly amazed by how many people in the church can be utterly faithful to the gospel, but then can be unwilling to be reformed by Scripture in other areas. In my Sunday school class on James, we recently discussed what it means for a man to ‘walk away from a mirror and forget what he looks like.’ James laments a common problem… the unwillingness to use God’s Word to look at and reform those areas in your life... Josh 10:14 says “There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD obeyed the voice of a man, for the LORD fought for Israel.” The NIV has “listened” instead of “obeyed”. So, bible scholars out there – which is correct? Is it obey or listen in the Hebrew? What are the implications of believing God obeyed a man? Why does the bible say here that this was the only time God obeyed a man? What does... Read more
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. To my charismatic eyes this passage is crystal clear. Paul wants to contrast the “mute idols” with... Read more
