Carla and Rebecca have tried to implement backlinks which are blogger-specific inline versions of what I called g-trackbacks Neither will work with blogger blogs properly unless you first change your site feed settings to FULL descriptions- the summary setting strips out all html and therefore all links from the feed, therefore meaning that your links elsewhere will not be picked up! This is further confirmation in case we didn’t know it already that google blogsearch is working entirely on RSS... Read more
Questions and Answers: has a great quote “If you are truly humble, you will always be ready to seek (and accept!) help from others. The present genteel, self-loving brand of piety assumes, “I don’t need anybody; I can set things right with God myself. But as long as you quietly try to work out your own salvation, you won’t get anywhere. Only when you recognize your need for others and reach out and open up to them will things move... Read more
Challies has done us a great service live blogging the Desiring God conference. Two quotes stick out to my mind: John Piper said “‘Suffering is no respector of persons. You cannot look to Christ on the cross and believe that you will be spared.'” The second was Tim’s thoughts on John Piper– I was almost surprised to see what an experience it is to sit under one of those “only a few every generation” type of preachers. When Piper preaches... Read more
I received this email today- I read with interest your article on Steve Chalke and The lost message of Jesus? posted on Sunday November the 21st 2004. I am currently doing a dissertation for my theology degree…..and came upon this article during some research. My dissertation is about the atonement theory and whether the theory of penal substitution is necessary to Christianity. You seem to feel extremely strongly that the idea that Jesus’? death as an atonement for our sins... Read more
Rebecca Writes has tried the “backlinks” feature of blogger. It is almost identical to the g-trackbacks I am speaking about except that the backlinks are displayed on your page, whilst the g-trackbacks is a link which creates a blogsearch. The list of links should be identical and will NOT simply be blogspot blogs, but any blog that google knows about (which is practically all of them!) Read more
Just to demonstrate that my post on gtrackbacks really does work,I thought I would post this link then time how long it takes to appear on the g-trackback search of the post below. UPDATEThe post got picked up by google blogsearch well within an hour. But, it seems that the link search excludes your own blog, which is probably a good thing, actually! Read more
Google’s Blog search is a truly fantastic resource. The breadth of its coverage of the blogosphere is awesome. Within minutes of me setting up my friends blog (brosdee), Blogsearch had the blog in its index. Provided you are set up to ping weblogs.com when you post (and perhaps one or two other places) you will almost certainly be in the Google blogsearch index and will be updated in near real-time. This means that it should be possible for what I... Read more
From an email I received: “When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you will be smiling and everyone around you will be crying.” The Puritans used to say we should think about our own death oftern. It certainly helps us to get things into perspective and to remember the correct order of our piorities which, surely in the light of death and this quote should be... Read more
girl talk: Friday Funnies has a great poem that ends with a fantastic twist…..Its called “The cookie thief”“‘A woman was waiting at an airport one night,With several long hours before her flight. She hunted for a book in the airport shop,Bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop. She was engrossed in her book, but happened to see,That the man sitting beside her, as bold as could be,Grabbed a cookie or two from the bag between,Which she tried to...
