This is a rather interesting article on the possibility that fasting may be good for the brain. Maybe the ancient ways are better after all? Read more at “Fasting can help protect against brain diseases, scientists say.” Read more

Interesting new step in the current war over religious freedom in the UK. Eric Pickles said. “By effectively reversing that illiberal ruling, we are striking a blow for localism over central interference, for freedom to worship over intolerant secularism, for Parliamentary sovereignty over judicial activism, and for long-standing British liberties over modern-day political correctness.” He added that the Bideford council case should be “a wake-up call”. “For too long, the public sector has been used to marginalise and attack faith... Many readers might dismiss the recent concerns about the ASA as a charismatic issue. The issue is much broader than that, as the following testimony demonstrates. The author takes up the story after a failed attempt at prayer for healing, and in the process most definitely does not become a charismatic as the full article explains. If you are a Brit and want to protect our right to continue to say such things why not sign the new epetition. Here... Read more
This morning I want to remind you of a glorious simple truth. It is the foundation of all truly Christian hope. It is the very centre of the gospel. Merely to announce that we are sinners and one has died for us is not enough. It never has been. No matter how accurate your doctrine of the atonement is, or how clear your view of Scripture, until you have made resurrection the very bedrock on which your life is built... Read more
From the BBC: British society is under threat from the rising tide of “militant secularisation” reminiscent of “totalitarian regimes”, a Cabinet minister will warn on Tuesday. In an historic visit to the Vatican, Baroness Warsi will express her “fear” about the marginalisation of religion throughout Britain and Europe, saying that faith needs “a seat at the table in public life”. This week, the Advertising Standards Authority upheld a complaint against a Christian group who’s leaflet claimed God can heal today. To be fair, their adjudications do not represent a legal judgement as such, and nobody is going to be sent to prison. But they apparently do have the power not only to stop people advertising in the printed press, but to command someone to take down a website advert. I suppose potentially, even, they could criticize this post. If they... Read more
I know, some of my readers will have read a headline like that and panicked. Has Warnie slipped into “Health wealth and prosperity” or “Word of Faith” ? Nope, not at all. But I do feel that it is so easy for us to throw out the baby with the bathwater. I remember at one point a few years ago I even began to wonder if we would be better off to stop talking about faith. Perhaps, I argued, we... Read more
Christians in the West are often quite good at trusting in God as our rock. We are taught doctrine, told that God is sovereign. We are taught that he stands behind every event that happens and is working for our good (Romans 8:28). Even when other people do things to us from a bad motive, we may respond like Joseph and say “you meant that for my harm, but God meant it for good.” God, we learn, is unmovable. He... Read more
“The Lord has founded Zion, and in her the afflicted of his people find refuge.” Isaiah 14:32 I have found myself thinking a lot about the church in the last day or so. This is no doubt prompted by Tope’s excellent sermon on Sunday. But what strikes me afresh is how easy it is to take for granted the best institution on earth, if it is even fair to call her an institution. The church is a body, and although... Read more
